26th International Cosmic Ray Conference
The 26th International Cosmic Ray Conference was held in Salt Lake City, Utah, from August 17-25, 1999 with over 800 attendees. This book contains the invited, rapporteur, and highlight papers. Governance and Performance
Drawing on recent advances in the social sciences, this volume shows how rigorous, theory-based empirical research can help improve the management of public policies and programs—and how better governance can lead to better performance. At this conference, both particle physicists and cosmologists presented exciting new results, from experiments that determine with unprecedented accuracy whether the universe is spatially flat, whether it is accelerating and what the nature of the dark matter could be, to more speculative ideas about its origin, based on theories of particle physics which might be confirmed or disproved in the not too distant future. This conference convinced everyone that we are truly living in the Golden Age of Cosmology.
GeV-TeV Gamma Ray Astrophysics Workshop
The topic of this conference was GeV to TeV gamma-ray astrophysics. Existing GeV-TeV observatories are being improved, and new analytical techniques are being developed. New detection techniques are yielding first results. Major observatories, both on the ground and in space, will begin operation within the next five years. New theories and multi-wavelength observations point to observing strategies. Included are papers on Blazars and Bl Lacs, On Markarian 421 and 501, Supernova Remnants, Gamma Ray Bursts, Other Sources, Imaging Atmosphere Cherenkov Observatories, Other TeV Observatories, and Future Observatories.
