Rare Diseases of the Respiratory System

Diagnosing rare diseases can be challenging, and treating these conditions is complex because of their often quite specific needs and treatment options. To address this, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) has published Rare Diseases of the Respiratory System. Structured into thematic sections, the book covers: the identification of rare diseases of the respiratory system and their differential diagnosis; rare diseases of the lung interstitium; rare diseases of the airways or alveoli; and rare pulmonary vascular diseases. The Guest Editors and authors belong to and/or support the vision and mission of the European Reference Network for Rare Diseases of the Respiratory System (ERN-LUNG), which offers expert support to both patients and professionals. As such, this comprehensive book will prove an excellent resource for healthcare professionals, researchers and students interested in rare diseases of the respiratory system.

Abstract: Objectives Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs frequently in patients with SSc. We investigated whether the presence of GERD and/or the use of anti-acid therapy, specifically proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), are associated with long-term outcomes, especially in SSc-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD). Methods We retrospectively analysed patients with SSc and SSc-ILD from the German Network for Systemic Sclerosis (DNSS) database (2003 onwards). Kaplan-Meier analysis compared overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with GERD vs without GERD (SSc and SSc-ILD), and PPI vs no PPI use (SSc-ILD only). Progression was defined as a decrease i...

The Tobacco Epidemic

This completely revised and enlarged 2nd edition of The Tobacco Epidemic provides a comprehensive update of the clinical, public health and political aspects of tobacco smoking. Since its 1st edition in 1997, knowledge on the health hazards of tobacco and nicotine addiction has increased considerably, but recent data has shown that the global problem has become more aggravated in low- and middle-income countries: if current trends continue, tobacco smoking will be responsible for the deaths of 1 billion people in the 21st century. Written by outstanding international experts, the book covers the history of tobacco production and use, the economics of tobacco use and control, as well as the h...

Abstract: Background: Nintedanib is approved for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and has been shown to slow disease progression by reducing annual lung function decline. Objective: To evaluate the results of a large cohort of IPF patients treated with nintedanib within a compassionate use program (CUP) in Germany (9 centers). Methods: Patients (≥40 years) were required to have a confirmed diagnosis of IPF, a forced vital capacity (FVC) ≥50% predicted (pred.) and a carbon monoxide diffusing capacity (DLCO) 30-79% pred. and not to be eligible for pirfenidone treatment. Clinical data, pulmonary function tests and adverse events were recorded up to July 2015. Results: Si...
