The International Conference on Health Informatics
This volume presents the proceedings of the International Conference on Health Informatics (ICHI). The conference was a new special topic conference initiative by the International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE), held in Vilamoura, Portugal on 7-9 November, 2013. The main theme of the ICHI2013 was “Integrating Information and Communication Technologies with Biomedicine for Global Health”. The proceedings offer a unique forum to examine enabling technologies of sensors, devices and systems that optimize the acquisition, transmission, processing, storage, retrieval of biomedical and health information as well as to report novel clinical applications of health information systems and the deployment of m-Health, e-Health, u-Health, p-Health and Telemedicine.
Why We Doubt
"This book is an attempt to investigate an important set of philosophical and practical problems related to skeptical doubt from the perspective of human cognition, an area where there has been quite a bit of progress in the past 50 years. The road will take us to some unexpected places. For example, I will argue that the capacity which draws us to philosophical skepticism serves a human rational function which is to weed out hasty reasoning in our everyday life. The capacity also seems to play a role in creative outside-the-box thinking, conspiratorial thought and even in some mental health illnesses, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder. Finally, our approach will allow us to develop a philosophical response to the skeptical challenge. A key to this argument will be to show that our inclinations toward skeptical doubt have a certain logic to them which has an identifiable flaw. We exploit this flaw to answer the skeptic. We will get to these points in this introduction and in the book, but we first need to clarify some terminology"--
XV Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing – MEDICON 2019

Creolization and Diaspora in the Portuguese Indies
This book provides an original study of the sizeable Portuguese community in Ayutthaya, the chief river-state in Siam, during a period of apparent decline (1640-1720). Portuguese populations were displaced from their chief settlements like Melaka and Makassar, and attracted to the river-states of mainland South-East Asia by a protective model of kingship, hopes of international trade and the opportunity to harvest souls. A variety of sources will be used to shed light on the fortunes and make-up of this displaced, mixed-race 'tribe', which was largely independent of the matrices of Portuguese colonial power, and fared poorly alongside other foreign communities in this remarkably open, dynamic environment. Circumstances changed for the better after the National Revolution of 1688, when Portuguese started to fill many of the jobs at court and in commerce previously occupied by Frenchmen and northern Europeans.
