The 1980s was a vibrant period of motorcycling in Britain. In bikes a golden era saw a dominance of Japanese bikes and evolution from old, twin shock 'UJMs' into racer-replicas, fully-faired tourers, screaming strokers and turbos. Behemoths like Suzuki's GSX1100 gave way to the Suzuki Katana and Kawasaki's revolutionary GPz900R. The mid-decade saw the first racer replica, Suzuki's GSX-R750, GP replica two-strokes like Yamaha's RD500 and turbo-charged follies such as Suzuki XN85. Yamaha's FZR1000 EXUP and Norton's F1 rotary sports came along. In bikesport, GPs were dominated by an American invasion of Kenny Roberts, Freddie Spencer and Eddie Lawson while Broton Dave Thorpe grabbed glory in world motocross. And on the street, hooligan 'LC Johnnys' evolved into Simpson Bandit wearing 'streetfighters' and day-glo bedecked road racers on GSXRs. All of this and more is remembered in Phil West's fascinating book.

The 1970s was a rich, exciting and, for today's fifty and sixty-somethings, a formative and nostalgia-rich period of motorcycling in Britain. In bikes it was an era that saw a passing of the baton from British to Japanese manufacturers. Triumph's Bonneville and Trident plus Norton's Commando powered into the decade but were quickly overtaken by Honda's CB750 and Kawasaki's Z1. Before long Suzuki's GT750, Yamaha's XS750, 'Fizzys', stroker 250s and more became the bikes of our bedroom walls. In bikesport, cheeky cockney Barry Sheene overtook the old guard of Hailwood and Read, and his Oxford bags and feather cut rivalled those of David Essex. All of this and more is remembered and celebrated in Phil West's fascinating book.

Why We Ride

Why would anyone want to do something as dangerous as motorcycling? For those who love to ride, no explanation is necessary. For everyone else, there’s Why We Ride. Designed as both an explanation for outsiders and an anthem for those within the fold, this new book presents the insights of Mark Barnes, PhD, a motorcycling clinical psychologist. As a popular columnist at Motorcycle Consumer News for more than 20 years, Dr. Barnes articulates the elusive physical, emotional, and interpersonal elements that make the world of the motorcyclist such a rich and exciting place. His wide-ranging text covers both sports psychology and the psychoanalysis of common riding experiences, including the re...

Classic Bikes

Many of the bikes featured in this book are classics from the heyday of motorbike manufacturing. Sadly a number of these famous names - such as Ariel, BSA, and Velocette - are consigned to the history books and the bikes themselves have become more and more of a collector's item. Many credit the demise of the British motorbike industry to the invasion of the Japanese manufacturers (Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda and Yamaha) in the 1970s that changed the face of motorcycling in Britain as they established themselves as a global phenomenon but brands such as Royal Enfield, Norton and Triumph have survived into the 21st Century and now proudly cruise the country's roads alongside the likes of Harley-Davidson and BMW.

Set your pulse racing with this stunning visual guide to over 1000 pin-up machines - iconic symbols of wanderlust, speed, and the open road. From Gottlieb Daimler's gas-powered "engine on a bicycle" which set fire to the seat on its first outing, to superbikes such as the Ducati 916, The Motorbike Book takes you on an enthralling tour of the bike's history. It shows you bikes that appeal to the head - practical forms of transport - and to the heart - a parade of classic pin-ups including cult machines such as the Honda RC30, the Triumph Bonneville and the Harley-Davidson XR750. The Motorbike Book shows the brilliance and impracticality of different designs and features detailed cross-sections of engines such as the air-cooled two-stroke. It explains how the great marques such as the Royal Enfield, the "legendary" Indian Scout, Vespa, and Norton all became household names. Whether you are a hardcore enthusiast, or looking forward to your first machine, this is one title you cannot be without.
