The scene dates back to that time when Gods lived among the people. The story begins with the birth of Goddess of love, Aphrodite, out of sea foam, carried to the shore of Cyprus by the waves. She falls in love with Hephaestus but later betrays him for Ares. Hephaestus being betrayed by Aphrodite, decides to leave Heaven and go back to the Earth, where he can give treatment to his heart because all heavenly elements seem dull to him. Aphrodite goes to reside in Ares's heart. If a rich man smiles in one land, a poor man cries in some other land. Fortune is in our own hands, we can change it any time, but the disease of betrayal will continue to exist - among humans and Gods. Hindu devotional traditions have long been recognized for their sacred geographies as well as the sensuous aspects of their devotees' experiences. Largely overlooked, however, are the subtle links between these religious expressions. Based on intensive fieldwork conducted among worshippers in Bengal’s Navadvip-Mayapur sacred complex, this book discusses the diverse and contrasting ways in which Bengal-Vaishnava devotees experience sacred geography and divinity. Sukanya Sarbadhikary documents an extensive range of practices, which draw on the interactions of mind, body, and viscera. She shows how perspectives on religion, embodiment, affect, and space are enriched when sacred spatialities of internal and external forms are studied at once.
Under the influence of his teacher, Louis de la Valle Poussin, Prof. Lamotte published several works in French, which were primarily editions, translations and commentaries on Tibetan and Chinese Buddhist texts. The theories and concepts contained in this particular work are closely related to those of the Abhidharmakosa, and as such it makes a valuable companion to that larger work. Here Prof. Pruden has provided a masterful English translation of Prof. Lamotte's work, and has added a brief biography of Prof. Lamotte and his scholarly accomplishments to familiarize the reader with this great scholar of Buddhism.
