Nikolay Bessonov Painter
Nikolay Vladislavovich Bessonov was born in 1962 in Moscow. He has a higher art education (MVHPU). Bessonov painted wonderful, romantic paintings of Roma (Gypsies). Roma in art is a different story altogether, a subject we hope to take up later. Another line of his paintings was for a book about Medieval witch persecution, with gruesome pictures of mostly beautiful women coming into trouble. The authors came into contact with Bessonov in connection with an exhibition of Roma Art and Culture in 1997 in Denmark. Please accept this little booklet for what it is and with all its limitations. We have long wanted to do it for obvious reasons as Bessonov was very talented artist and a great friend of Roma. The booklet is produced from the images we got from him in curating the exhibition. We have some more images in a box somewhere in storage, so this booklet may see a second edition.

Les Roms dans l art, c est une toute autre histoire, un sujet que nous espérons aborder plus tard. Une autre ligne de ses peintures était destinée à un livre sur la persécution des sorcières médiévales, avec des images horribles de femmes, pour la plupart belles, en difficulté. Les auteurs sont entrés en contact avec Bessonov à l'occasion d'une exposition « Art et culture roms » en 1997 au Danemark. Veuillez accepter ce petit livret tel qu'il est et avec toutes ses limites. Nous voulions le faire depuis longtemps pour des raisons évidentes, car Bessonov était un artiste très talentueux et un grand ami de Roma. Le livret est réalisé à partir des images que nous avons obtenues de lui lors du commissariat de l'exposition. Nous avons quelques images supplémentaires dans une boîte quelque part dans le stockage, ce livret pourrait donc connaître une deuxième édition.

Disputed Memory
The world wars, genocides and extremist ideologies of the 20th century are remembered very differently across Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe, resulting sometimes in fierce memory disputes. This book investigates the complexity and contention of the layers of memory of the troubled 20th century in the region.
