Bronze Age Settlement and Land-Use in Thy, Northwest Denmark (Volume 1 & 2)
This two volume monograph about the region of Thy in the early Bronze Age provides a high resolution archaeological and ecological model of the organisation of landscape, settlements and households during the period 1500-1100 BC. Bordering the North Sea to the west, and the calmer waters of the Limfjord to the east, the region of Thy in Denmark experienced four centuries of intense economic and demographic expansion. By combining results from environmental and economic research (pollen and palaeo-botanical analyses) with intensive field surveys and excavations of farmsteads with exceptional preservation, it has been possible to open a window to the changes that transformed Bronze Age society and its environment during a few centuries of exceptional expansion and wealth consumption. The results from this interdisciplinary venture made it possible to link together the histories of local farmsteads with the wider regional and global history of the Bronze Age in North-western Europe during this period. Here is much to feed on for students and researchers of the Bronze Age alike.
Hysteresis Effects of Changing Parameters of Noncooperative Games
We adapt the method used by Jaynes to derive the equilibria of statistical physics to instead derive equilibria of bounded rational game theory. We analyze the dependence of these equilibria on the parameters of the underlying game, focusing on hysteresis effects. In particular, we show that by gradually imposing individual-specific tax rates on the players of the game, and then gradually removing those taxes, the players move from a poor equilibrium to one that is better for all of them.

Archäologische Chronologie und historische Interpretation
Chronologie ist archäologische Grundlagenforschung. Doch sind die verwendeten Chronologiemodelle auch von der schriftlichen Überlieferung unabhängig? Die vorliegende Studie untersucht dieses Problem für das 5. bis 8. Jahrhundert in Süddeutschland und kommt zu dem Schluss, dass schriftliche Quellen auch heute noch weitreichenden Einfluss auf die Chronologie der Merowingerzeit haben. Hierzu zählen u.a. der Konflikt zwischen Franken und Alemannen in den Jahren um 500, die Eingliederung der Alamannia in das Merowingerreich sowie der Fall des Thüringerreiches 531. Doch auch das oft verwendete Generationenkonzept ist Gegenstand kritischer Betrachtungen. Im zweiten Teil seiner Studie stellt der Autor daher ein neues Chronologiemodell vor, das auf statistischen Auswertungen von mehr als 650 relevanten Grabfunden aus Süddeutschland basiert und erstmals auch das 7. und 8. Jahrhundert einbezieht. Durch ausführliche und reich illustrierte Appendices ist künftig eine schnelle und sichere chronologische Ansprache merowingerzeitlicher Grabfunde aus Süddeutschland möglich. Diese Arbeit wurde ausgezeichnet mit dem Barbara-Scholkmann-Förderpreis für historische Archäologie (2018).
Spuren von Krieg und Terror
In den letzten Jahren hat die zeitgeschichtliche Archäologie erheblich an Bedeutung gewonnen. Von besonderem Interesse sind Tatorte von Krieg und Terror des 20. Jahrhunderts in Deutschland, in Europa und vielen anderen Teilen der Welt. Gedenken und Erinnerung an die Opfer der Gewalt sind stets im Fokus. Dies schließt die würdevolle und ethische Behandlung der Opfer ein, es geht oft darum, ihnen ihren Namen und ihre individuelle Geschichte zurückzugeben. Dazu bieten sich die materiellen Hinterlassenschaften sehr gut an, seien es bauliche Überreste von Baracken der Zwangslager und Tötungseinrichtungen, seien es die zahllosen Objekte der Opfer und der Täter, die einen tiefen Einblick in die Zeit geben. Von besonderem Aussagewert für die global zu beobachtenden Überlebensstrategien der Häftlinge, aber auch der Soldaten, sind zahlreiche Objekte, die mit einfachsten Mitteln selbst gefertigt wurden und an das soziale Leben vor der Gefangenschaft, vor dem Krieg anknüpfen oder erinnern sollen.

The Unnatural Nature of Science
