Educação para a paz, educação para a saúde, educação ambiental, etc. são os chamados temas ou eixos transversais; um conjunto de temas de interesse social que a escola é levada a desenvolver ao longo de todo o ensino obrigatório e que tenta contribuir para a aquisição de conhecimentos, atitudes e hábitos adequados para uma cidadania mais saudável, justa e solidária. O autor defende a importância desses ensinamentos em uma escola excessivamente distante dos problemas sociais e ambientais do mundo real, estabelecendo diretrizes de ação para a organização adequada do currículo escolar em torno desses temas, começando pelo projeto pedagógico da escola até chegar ao trabalho na sala de aula.
