“You’Re Gonna Be Special, My Child.”

The motivation to write this book flowed naturally from the grace of the Nobel Peace Prize, a prize won the hard way by a quartet of organizations determined to unravel an untenable situation in an unbreathable atmosphere. Taking the form of an account of my personal journey leading up to the culmination of the Nobel Prize, the book rightly belongs to the genre of real biographies; nevertheless, it is at the same time a scrupulous testimony, namely mine, on events experienced first-hand during a crucial period of the political scene in Tunisia, where I was fated to play a frontstage role. So, dear reader, I faithfully offer you my narrative, which is intended to be unadorned and transparent....

Political Revolt and Youth Unemployment in Tunisia

This book discusses youth unemployment in post-revolutionary Tunisia, paying particular attention to the so-called skill mismatch. Youth unemployment was one of the major factors triggering the Tunisian revolution, and continues to be a central socio-economic challenge. The Tunisian labour market is marked by a strong increase of higher education graduates while the economic system is dominated by sectors mainly employing a less qualified labour force. This study investigates current labour market trends, and provides insights into the underlying causes of persisting high youth unemployment. The author argues that economic crisis, difficult political conditions since 2011, and inefficient labour market policies did not foster sufficient job creation, and that special attention needs to be paid to the educational causes of the skill mismatch in youth employment in future sustainable development models.

Tunisia

The Arab Spring began and ended with Tunisia. In a region beset by brutal repression, humanitarian disasters, and civil war, Tunisia's Jasmine Revolution alone gave way to a peaceful transition to a functioning democracy. Within four short years, Tunisians passed a progressive constitution, held fair parliamentary elections, and ushered in the country's first-ever democratically elected president. But did Tunisia simply avoid the misfortunes that befell its neighbors, or were there particular features that set the country apart and made it a special case? In Tunisia: An Arab Anomaly, Safwan M. Masri explores the factors that have shaped the country's exceptional experience. He traces Tunisia...

Colouring the Future

The world is in a mess – but the United Nations has a plan to fix things. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are little talked about but they are ambitious, utopian and cover a vast range of seemingly intractable issues. What is more, this book argues, they will probably work. Gary Rynhart has worked within the UN system for two decades, wrestling with difficult problems in many different countries around the world. He is optimistic that a combination of the SDGs and the fresh perspective of the young can deliver the massive changes that the world so badly needs. The book begins by providing an insider’s insight into how big global deals like the SDGs are negotiated behind the scenes. It continues by looking in turn at critical issues and showing how UN agencies have tackled them in the past and plan to do so in future in the arenas of human rights, decent work, democracy, conflicts and disasters. It concludes by examining the political context: a world dogged by populism and fake news but in which the engagement of Generations Y and Z promises to ride to the rescue.
