Be Your Own Sailing Coach

If you want to win races you need to get organised! This unique guide shows you how to set your overall sailing goals, and breaks them down into manageable – yet stretching – mini-goals. Jon Emmett breaks racing down into 20 key skills (such as speed to windward and tactics) and, with detailed analysis of key techniques, uses a step-by-step guide to explain how to highlight your own strengths and weaknesses, and how you can improve each skill. This book will help you get to the front of the fleet, whether your goal is to win at club, open, national or international level. You will get tips from Olympic racers, and learn their approaches to each key skill; improve you sailing technique in manageable stages; and discover how to set goals and create the action plans to achieve them. Along the way you will find advice from Olympic sailors and exercises to turn you into a winner, with contributions from Paul Goodison, Simon Hiscocks and Joe Glanfield.

Trade, Development, Cooperation

Bi- and multilateral trade relations between external actors and individual African states or regional blocs are becoming ever more decisive. The trade policies of both the USA and the EU are anything but helpful. This is true of the USAs African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), the EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with South Africa and more recently the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) negotiated in the Post-Cotonou era of European relations with the South. All these initiatives have a potentially detrimental impact on regional integration. The latter remains, however, a priority in the developmental policy and strategy documents as formulated both by African agencies as well as the pa...

The Wide Road to Destruction

Two diametrically opposite encounters take place at the same time but in different places. One celebrates the Goodisons' 25th wedding anniversary. The other hatches a plot to murder Paul Goodison. Pamela Goodison often reminds her husband that he is becoming spiritually and morally sterile. He no longer refers to the Gospel as his guiding light and is only concerned with accumulating wealth. The plotters build on envy and hate to commit the crime. After a failed attempt, Pamela is murdered leaving Paul devastated. One killer is caught and sentenced, while the mastermind escapes and settles abroad. Paul decides to travel and expand his knowledge on emerging nations particularly Barbados, Botswana, Burma, Egypt and Zimbabwe. During his travels, he seeks new adventures. In his weakened state, Paul ends up having tawdry affairs and becomes involved in drug trafficking. He loses his self-control and his self-respect. Paul meets Wendy on a cruise ship, becomes involved, and reluctantly proposes to her, which makes him even more depressed because he doesn't really love her. Then Paul stumbles upon the man who murdered his wife.

Understanding Namibia

Since independence in 1990, Namibia has witnessed only one generation with no memory of colonialism - the 'born frees', who voted in the 2009 elections. The anti-colonial liberation movement, SWAPO, dominates the political scene, effectively making Namibia a de facto one-party state dominated by the first 'struggle generation'. While those in power declare their support for a free, fair, and just society, the limits to liberation are such that emancipation from foreign rule has only been partially achieved. Despite its natural resources Namibia is among the world's most unequal societies and indicators of wellbeing have not markedly improved for many among the former colonized majority, desp...

ILCA Book

The single manufacturer one-design (SMOD) Laser, launched just over 50 years ago, has now been renamed the ILCA and moved to multiple licensed builders. To reflect this change, the leading book on Laser sailing since 1979, The Laser Book, has now changed its name to The ILCA Book and moved from a single to multiple authors. In this latest edition, ILCA guru and multiple champion Jon Emmett has updated Tim Davison's seminal text to make it completely relevant to today's ILCA sailors. All the latest control lines, masts and sails are covered for all 3 rigs. Targeted at the club sailor, The ILCA Book covers the techniques and skills needed to succeed in ILCA sailing, for those starting out thro...

Foul Play dissects the age-old subject of cheating in all its absurdity. From plain old doping to claiming a marathon victory despite having driven the middle section of the race, from match-fixing to diving for a penalty - cheating in sport is as old as sport itself. There are plenty of well-known cases of cheats being found out in sport: Ben Johnson, for example, was stripped of his 100m Olympic medal after a positive drugs test; South African cricketer Hansie Cronje was banned from all cricket for life after admitting involvement in match-rigging; rugby union recently found itself having to deal with the "bloodgate" scandal. However, there are myriad other examples of bending the rules mo...

Free at Last!

Paul survives an attempt on his life, only to learn that both his sons are tragically lost at sea. He is not only physically weak and emotionally barren, but loses all hope for the future and resorts to a suicide attempt. When this fails, he nurtures a deep hatred for God, whom he once trusted. After his encounter with an atheist, his hatred for God turns to disbelief, and he enthusiastically reviews the material provided by his new atheist friend to prove that there really is no supreme being. Paul’s old friendship with a Catholic monk and other friends fails to alter his new views about atheism. On the contrary, he mocks the monk’s arguments that there is a supreme being. But Paul is a...
