The contributions to Making of Copernicus examine exemplarily how some of the Copernicus myths came about and if they could hold their ground or have vanished again. Are there links between a factual or postulated transformation of world images and the application of certain scientific metaphors, especially the metaphor of a revolution? Were there interactions and amalgamations of the literary and scientific enthronement, or outlawry of Copernicus and if so, how did they take place? On the other hand, are there repercussions of the scientific-historical reconstructions and hagiographies on the literary image of Copernicus as sketched by novelists even in the 20th century? The history of the reception of Copernicus shall not be dominantly dealt with from the point of view of a factual affirmation and rejection of the astronomer and his doctrine but rather as accomplishments of transformation respectively. Thus, the essays in this volume investigate transformations: methodological, institutional, textual, and visual transformations of the Copernican doctrine and the topical, rhetorical and literary transformations of the historical person of Copernicus respectively.
The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, to give it its full name, owes its origins to the Pour le Merite (Blue Max), an imperial award dating back to 1740. The Complete Knight's Cross is the only book to tell the story of all 7,364 men who were awarded it (including all the disputed awards). The book has over 200 photos of holders of the medal and over 100 photos of their graves. Volume One deals with 1939-41 (numbers 1-1267) and is subtitled The Years of Victory. Volume Two deals with 1942-43 (numbers 1268-3685) and is subtitled The Years of Stalemate. Volume Three deals with 1944-45 (numbers 3686-7364) and is subtitled The Years of Defeat. The recipients are listed in the order of the date of award. Each entry starts with the recipients rank and name, followed by details of the action or actions for witch they were awarded it. Other interesting facts and stories are also included for many of them. Finally their burial locations, where known are given. Any higher awards (Oak Leaves, Swords, Diamonds and the ultimate Golden award) are also covered.

Der Band untersucht Figuren der Endlichkeit in der europäischen Romantik. Ausgangspunkt ist die Beobachtung, dass Figuren des Letzten – letzte Menschen (J.-B Grainville: Le dernier homme (1805); M. Shelley: The Last Man (1826)), letzte Dinge (I. Kant: Das Ende aller Dinge (1794) – in der Romantik ein spezifisches Endlichkeitsbewusstsein artikulieren. Die einsetzende romantische Reflexion der Endlichkeit, die sich synchron mit den zeitgenössischen Diskursen über die Begrenztheit von Ressourcen ausbildet, stellt dabei den Beginn einer genuin modernen Erfahrung dar. Die Verzeitlichung wird um 1800, so die Grundthese, vor allem verhandelt und reflektiert an poetologischen und philosophischen Figuren der Endlichkeit, des Letzten und des Verbrauchbaren. Indem der Band etwa das Fragment, die Ruine oder die „Denkmäler der alten Zeiten" (F. Schiller) als Figurationen einer Reflexion der Endlichkeit in den Blick nimmt, schärft und ergänzt er klassische Elemente der Epochenkonstruktion der Romantik, welche bislang vorwiegend mit Begriffen wie Entgrenzung, Potenzierung und Unendlichkeit oder mit einem Fokus auf Gegenwart, Jetztzeit und Augenblick in Verbindung gebracht wird.
