The Country of Football
Brazil has done much to shape football/soccer, but how has soccer shaped Brazil? Despite the political and social importance of the beautiful game to the country, the subject has hitherto received little attention. This book presents groundbreaking work by historians and researchers from Brazil, the United States, Britain and France, who examine the political significance, in the broadest sense, of the sport in which Brazil has long been a world leader. The authors consider questions such as the relationship between soccer, the workplace and working class culture; the formation of Brazilian national identity; race relations; political and social movements; and the impact of the sport on social mobility. Contributions to the book range in time from the late nineteenth century, when the British first introduced the sport to Brazil, to the present day, as the 'country of soccer' prepares itself to host the 2014 World Cup, painting a vivid picture of the many ways in which soccer exists and functions in Brazil, both on and off the pitch.

Paulo Fontes analisa e descreve, com riqueza de detalhes, a vida dos migrantes nordestinos que vieram para o bairro de São Miguel Paulista em meados do século XX e que tanto contribuíram para as grandes transformações econômicas, sociais e políticas da cidade de São Paulo. O autor reconstrói o cotidiano desses trabalhadores, em casa, no trabalho, na rua e no lazer, e apresenta ao leitor um painel vivo de suas lutas e desafios. Em vez de vítimas de processos impessoais, os migrantes atuaram como sujeitos da sua própria história , é o que este livro demonstra.
Anistia, um passado presente?
A obra aqui apresentada é resultado de duas ações no campo da história pública: a exposição "Anistia: um passado presente?" e um ciclo de conferências que reuniu especialistas sobre o tema, fruto da parceria entre a Escola de Humanidades da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul e o Arquivo Histórico do Rio Grande do Sul. Os textos resultantes do ciclo de conferência integram esta coletânea. Ambas as ações estiveram centradas no debate acerca da cidadania, dos direitos humanos e das lutas pela democracia, no entanto, não deixaram de destacar as derrotas em decorrência de uma Lei parcial e que até hoje garante a impunidade de crimes cometidos na Ditadura, mas que garantiu que reconhecêssemos a manutenção da luta pela adoção de uma justiça de transição.Ainda que tardias e limitadas, foram essas ações que inviabilizaram o silêncio, trazendo para o espaço público uma memória subterrânea que impede que o terrorismo de Estado seja esquecido.

Migration and the Making of Industrial São Paulo
Published in 2008 and winner of the 2011 Thomas E. Skidmore Prize, Paulo Fontes's Migration and the Making of Industrial São Paulo is a detailed social history of São Paulo's extraordinary urban and industrial expansion. Fontes focuses on those migrants who settled in the suburb of São Miguel Paulista, which grew from 7,000 residents in the 1940s to over 140,000 two decades later. Reconstructing these migrants' everyday lives within a broad social context, Fontes examines the economic conditions that prompted their migration, their creation of an integrated identity and community, and their efforts to gain worker rights.
