Abstract: Purpose Early identification of high-risk patients is an important component in improving infection prevention. The SAPS2, APACHE2, Core-10-TISS, and SOFA scores are already widely used to estimate mortality, morbidity and nursing workload, but this study evaluated their usefulness in assessing a patient's risk of ICU-acquired infection. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study by analyzing all patient admissions to seven ICUs at Charité Berlin, Germany in 2017 and 2018. The four scores were documented by physicians on the day of admission. The infection control staff monitored daily whether the patients experienced lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs), urinary trac...

Predicting Antimicrobial Resistance in Pseudomonas Aeruginosa with Machine Learning-enabled Molecular Diagnostics

Abstract: Limited therapy options due to antibiotic resistance underscore the need for optimization of current diagnostics. In some bacterial species, antimicrobial resistance can be unambiguously predicted based on their genome sequence. In this study, we sequenced the genomes and transcriptomes of 414 drug-resistant clinical Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. By training machine learning classifiers on information about the presence or absence of genes, their sequence variation, and expression profiles, we generated predictive models and identified biomarkers of resistance to four commonly administered antimicrobial drugs. Using these data types alone or in combination resulted in high (0.8-...

Applied Physiology in Intensive Care Medicine 1

The two previous editions of Applied Physiology in Intensive Care Medicine proved extremely successful, and the book has now been revised and split into two volumes to enhance ease of use. This first volume comprises three elements -- "physiological notes," “technical notes,” and seminal studies. The physiological notes concisely and clearly capture the essence of the physiological perspectives underpinning our understanding of disease and response to therapy. The technical notes then succinctly explain some of the basics of “how to” in this technology-centered field of critical care medicine. Finally, a number of seminal studies are provided on diverse topics in intensive care. Applied Physiology in Intensive Care, written by some of the most renowned experts in the field, is an up-to-date compendium of practical bedside knowledge that will serve the clinician as an invaluable reference source on key issues regularly confronted in everyday practice.

The patient room is the smallest cell of the hospital organism. Its layout determines the structure of the ward and is therefore a decisive factor for the entire building. Many requirements have to be met. The patient's sense of well-being can be positively influenced by the design: homely materials, an attractive view and sufficient privacy are important objectives. Equally important are the working conditions for the staff, especially short distances and an efficient care routine. Finally, even the risk of infection can be reduced by a conscientiously planned room layout. This publication provides a systematic overview of the design task patient room and shows exemplary solutions: both typologically and in selected case studies.

Infectious Disease Surveillance

This unique book covers many major disease surveillance systems, drawing on the experiences of leading experts from around theworld. Beginning with an overview of the newly revisedInternational Health Regulations from the World HealthOrganization, the book progresses to explore surveillance systemscurrently in practice. Examples included are as far ranging assurveillance for antimicrobial-resistant foodborne pathogens, vaccine adverse events, influenza and HIV/AIDS, to communicabledisease surveillance during complex emergencies in Iraq and Sudan. Infectious Disease Surveillance also covers the use ofmodern technologies to track infectious diseases, includingmolecular epidemiologic techniques a...
