Potency of the Vernacular Settlements
The 11th ISVS (International Seminar for Vernacular Settlements) that was hosted by the School of Environmental Design and Architecture, Navrachana University brought together some important ideas and concerns as related to questions of development at large and vernacular settlements. From questions of ecological balance, use of resources and the way of the pastoral to the ones concerning technology, design and materiality of built environment. The 11th ISVS will be remembered as one that brought whole generation of young and talented scholars in the foreground. Many of them had carried out extensive field work to support their research. The seminar was also remarkable from the point of view of extensive representation of vernacular traditions in different part of the Indian Sub-continent and Southeast Asia along with a range of theoretical concerns.
History of Urban Form of India
India is undergoing massive urbanization. The future form of Indian cities in terms of urban planning and design is most urgent. A study of the key historical moments from the point of view of urban development is thus important. With case studies from the time cities originated in the Indian subcontinent and hand-drawn illustrations of these cities till the ones in recent times, the author discusses the last two hundred years of urban development in India with emphasis on the overall structure of the city, its nature of public places, institutions, and housing.
Embodied Dependencies and Freedoms

The Bungalow in Twentieth-Century India
The primary era of this study - the twentieth century - symbolizes the peak of the colonial rule and its total decline, as well as the rise of the new nation state of India. The processes that have been labeled 'westernization' and 'modernization' radically changed middle-class Indian life during the century. This book describes and explains the various technological, political and social developments that shaped one building type - the bungalow - contemporaneous to the development of modern Indian history during the period of British rule and its subsequent aftermath. Drawing on their own physical and photographic documentation, and building on previous work by Anthony King and the Desais, the authors show the evolution of the bungalow's architecture from a one storey building with a verandah to the assortment of house-forms and their regional variants that are derived from the bungalow. Moreover, the study correlates changes in society with architectural consequences in the plans and aesthetics of the bungalow. It also examines more generally what it meant to be modern in Indian society as the twentieth century evolved.
Eloquent Spaces
Eloquent Spaces adopts the twin analytic of meaning and community to write a fresh history of building in early India. It presents a new perspective on the principles and practices of early Indian architecture. Defining it broadly over a range of space uses, the book argues for architecture as a form of cultural production as well as public consumption. The Structure
The Structure explores the work of Mahendra Raj, India's most significant structural engineer. Examining Raj's sixty prolific years of practice, this volume looks at his unusually inventive and intuitive work and how he has offered pioneering engineering solutions for buildings in exposed concrete. As this book shows, many of his structures can be seen as monuments narrating the history of architecture in post-independence India. The Structure features twenty-eight of Mahendra Raj's buildings in detail through rich photographs and color reproductions of archival plans. Essays are contributed by Raj himself and by the architects Neelkanth Chhaya and Jaimini Mehta. Also included are interviews with Raj by the architect Sanjay Prakash and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, a conversation with the architect BV Doshi, as well as an illustrated complete list of Raj's works.
