The second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century witnessed important changes in ecology, climate and human behaviour that favoured the development of urban pests. Most alarmingly, urban planners now face the dramatic expansion of urban sprawl, in which city suburbs are growing into the natural habitats of ticks, rodents and other pests. Also, many city managers now erroneously assume that pest-borne diseases are relics of the past. All these changes make timely a new analysis of the direct and indirect effects of present-day urban pests on health. Such an analysis should lead to the development of strategies to manage them and reduce the risk of exposure. To this end, WHO invited international experts in various fields - pests, pest-related diseases and pest management - to provide evidence on which to base policies. These experts identified the public health risk posed by various pests and appropriate measures to prevent and control them. This book presents their conclusions and formulates policy options for all levels of decision-making to manage pests and pest-related diseases in the future. [Ed.]

Understanding the reproductive physiology and endocrinology of fishes is essential for captive maturation and seed production in the field of aquaculture. Studying the spermatology of fishes is a comparatively new focus in aquaculture, which has emerged as an important area of fish research over the past two decades. In this regard, the cryopreservation of fish gametes is a crucial aspect. Moreover, energetics studies of gametes have become essential, considering the loss of vigour in the spermatozoa after cryopreservation. The latest development in this context is the cryopreservation of spermatogonial stem cell, which is also covered in the book, along with detailed information on embryo cr...

"Ocimum: An Overview highlights the major milestones in the last three decades of taxonomical identification of Ocimum, providing insight into its potentialities and present demands. The authors explore the utilization of in vitro plant tissue cultures and genetic transformation systems for the improvement of sweet basil. An overview of the primary phenolic compounds found within basil is provided, along with their associated health benefits, and various strategies used to increase phytochemical levels in basil are discussed. Traditional uses of basil are discussed, including in the treatment of head colds and as a cure for warts and worms, as well as an appetite stimulant, carminative, and diuretic. The leishmanicidal and antimicrobial properties of Ocimum are discussed in an effort to assess its potential utility in the production of antimicrobials and leishmanicidal agents of natural origin. In closing, the authors summarize the main data on the biologically active substances and therapeutic activities of Ocimum species based on the current evidence"--
Biology of Stress in Fish: Fish Physiology provides a general understanding on the topic of stress biology, including most of the recent advances in the field. The book starts with a general discussion of stress, providing answers to issues such as its definition, the nature of the physiological stress response, and the factors that affect the stress response. It also considers the biotic and abiotic factors that cause variation in the stress response, how the stress response is generated and controlled, its effect on physiological and organismic function and performance, and applied assessment of stress, animal welfare, and stress as related to model species. - Provides the definitive reference on stress in fish as written by world-renowned experts in the field - Includes the most recent advances and up-to-date thinking about the causes of stress in fish, their implications, and how to minimize the negative effects - Considers the biotic and abiotic factors that cause variation in the stress response
