Rendezvous with Rebels

Rajeev Bhattacharyya walked nearly 800 kilometres, over some of the most hostile terrain and through no man's land. His journey, which took three months and twenty days to complete, is unprecedented in Indian journalism. He visited the rebel bases in Eastern Nagaland, which covers a part of Myanmar's Sagaing Division, stayed in the ULFA camp and interviewed its chief of staff Paresh Baruah, as also chairman of the NSCN (Khaplang), S.S. Khaplang himself. He interacted with rebels from banned outfits like the NDFB, UPPK, PLA and other groups - for many of them, this was their first conversation with an Indian journalist. Bhattacharyya is one of very few journalists in the world to have made th...

Human Security in a Polarized World

The term "polarization" describes the widening gaps in national economies, sociocultural views, and political beliefs. Ideological differences in politics can be a sign of it, resulting in impasse and a decline in confidence in democratic institutions. In terms of the economy, globalization exacerbates disparities between rich and poor regions, while polarization exacerbates wealth gaps and opportunity disparities. Social polarization breeds mistrust and intolerance, leading to identity-based disputes and further splintering society. Although globalization encourages integration and connectivity, it has also heightened polarizing tendencies. It exacerbates international instability, fuels trade disputes, and expands the wealth gap between the rich and the poor. Traditions and values are eroding as a result of cultural globalization. In this respect, globalization must be used to promote inclusivity, tolerance, and cross-national cooperation in order to combat polarization.

In the three decades following 1947, the state of Assam underwent massive political turmoil, geographical instability, and social and demographic upheaval, among others. It offers an authoritative account that sets new standards in the writing of regional political history. Not to be missed by any one keen on Assam, India, Asia or world history in the twentieth century.

India's Near East

India’s near east encompasses Bangladesh, Myanmar and the Indian states of the ‘Northeast’—Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram. Celebrated as a theatre of geo-economic connectivity typified by India’s ‘Act East’ policy, the region is key not only to India’s great-power rivalry with China, which first boiled over in the 1962 war, but to the idea(s) of India itself. It is also one of the most intricately partitioned lands anywhere on Earth. Rent by communal and class violence, the region has birthed extreme forms of religious and ethnic nationalisms and communist movements. The Indian state’s survival instinct and pursuit of reg...

The Northeast of India is a place with many different groups of people, each with their own special way of life. It's beautiful, but also a place where people have faced hard times. Many folks there feel left out and not fully part of India. As someone who cares deeply about this area, I wanted to learn more and share what I found. This book is my humble attempt to amplify these voices, to bridge the chasm of misunderstanding that has long separated the Northeast from the rest of India. It's a labor of love, born from countless conversations with tribal elders, young activists, and everyday people who shared their hopes, fears, and dreams with a stranger who came to listen. Through these pag...
