This book contains a selected number of papers which were fIrst presented at the VIllth World Congress of Comparative Education in Prague, July 8--14, 1992. The Executive Committee of the World Council of Comparative and Education Societies had gladly accepted the bid made by the (at that time still united) Czech and Slovak Comparative Education Society to organise this congress in their beautiful and historic capital. The choice of Prague, underlined by President Vaclav Havel's patronage, as well as the Congress theme, were intended as a demonstration of the (re-)opened communication among educationists allover the world, as a result of the peaceful upheavals ('velvet revolutions') which were awakening the countries of Central, South East and East Europe in those days. It is true that a good part of the en thusiasm has faded since then and given way to manifestations of disenchantment. Education can be regarded as a striking example of the recent developments between "euphoria" and "normalcy".

Common Interests, Uncommon Goals
The World Council of Comparative Education Societies (WCCES) was established in 1970 as an umbrella body which brought together five national and regional comparative education societies. Over the decades it greatly expanded, and now embraces three dozen societies. This book presents histories of the WCCES and its member societies. It shows ways in which the field has changed over the decades, and the forces which have shaped it in different parts of the world.
Aspects of Education and the European Union
In early 1995 a series of seminars was held under the aegis of the Oxford Centre for Comparative Studies in Education, based in the Department of Educational Studies of the University of Oxford, on aspects of education and the European Union. The papers given at those seminars are collected together in this volume. They range from an overview of the legal position following the Maastricht Treaty, through an examination of what is meant by the 'European dimension' in education and a study of the curriculum in countries of the European Union, to analyses of faculty mobility and a case study of the Europeanisation of education in science and engineering.
Critical Approach to the Media in Civic Education
This report is based on the findings of the three-year project which examined the media's influence on the lives of young people throughout Europe. It discusses educational methods for raising the critical awareness of pupils about the power of the media (including television programmes and advertising), as well as providing practical suggestions for materials and projects. The report looks at the background of the project and outlines details of the workshops involving teachers and some international projects involving classes from different European countries.
Child-Centred Education
This volume is a critical study of one of today’s most controversial topics in educational theory, setting the many arguments in perspective and clarifying the issues that arise when attention is focused on the learner. The author examines the problems of individual education, the distinctive demands childhood makes on the school and the claims of social education. The related questions of freedom, authority and discipline are then discussed, together with the ways in which curriculum development must take account of the learner’s interests, needs and dispositions in preparing him/her for life. The concept of educating the whole person is critically examined, together with the claim that education for life and the development of personal integrity require an integrated curriculum. Since child-centred educational theory is often dismissed as irrelevant to practice, the book concludes with an assessment of the various limitations which concern with practical activity imposes on educational theorists.
