Elisabetta Caminer Turra (1751-96) was one of the most prominent women in eighteenth-century Italy and a central figure in the international "Republic of Letters." A journalist and publisher, Caminer participated in important debates on capital punishment, freedom of the press, and the abuse of clerical power. She also helped spread Enlightenment ideas into Italy by promoting and publishing Voltaire's latest works and translating new European plays-plays she herself directed, to great applause, on Venetian stages. Bringing together Caminer's letters, poems, and journalistic writings, nearly all published for the first time here, Selected Writings offers readers an intellectual biography of this remarkable figure as well as a glimpse into her intimate correspondence with the most prominent thinkers of her day. Through the lens of identification procedures, this book examines how the processes of state-building affected European societies during the Napoleonic period. Firstborn of Venice

Citizens of Vicenza, the first city to come under Venetian rule, proclaimed their city "firstborn of Venice" and a model for the Venetian Republic's dominions on the terraferma. In Firstborn of Venice James Grubb tests commonplace attributes of the Renaissance state through a rich case study of society and politics in fifteenth-century Vicenza. Looking at relations between Venetian and local governments and at the location of power in Vicentine society, Grubb reveals the structural limitations of Venetian authority and the mechanisms by which local patricians deflected the claims of the capital. Firstborn of Venice explores issues that are political in the broadest sense: legal institutions and administrative practices, fiscal politics, the consolidation of elites, ecclesiastical management, and the contrasting governing ideologies of ruler and subjects.
Flori, a Pastoral Drama
One of the first pastoral dramas published by an Italian woman, Flori is Maddalena Campiglia's most substantial surviving literary work and one of the earliest known examples of secular dramatic writing by a woman in Europe. Although acclaimed in her day, Campiglia (1553-95) has not benefited from the recent wave of scholarship that has done much to enhance the visibility and reputation of contemporaries such as Isabella Andreini, Moderata Fonte, and Veronica Franco. As this bilingual, first-ever critical edition of Flori illustrates, this neglect is decidedly unwarranted. Flori is a work of great literary and cultural interest, noteworthy in particular for the intensity of its focus on the experiences and perceptions of its female protagonists and their ideals of female autonomy. Flori will be read by those involved in the study of early modern literature and drama, women's studies, and the study of gender and sexuality in this period.

1507 erschien in Vicenza die Anthologie Paesi Novamente retrovati. Et Novo Mondo da Alberico Vesputio Florentino intitulato. Bereits 1508 wurde in Nürnberg eine frühneuhochdeutsche Übersetzung gedruckt. Die in der Sammlung enthaltenen Berichte betreffen Reisen italienischer, portugiesischer und spanischer Entdecker nach Afrika, Indien und Amerika im Zeitraum 1455 bis 1503. Die Seefahrer standen auf ihren Reisen unablässig vor der Aufgabe, neuentdeckte Orte und bisher unbekannte Sachverhalte zu benennen, in Worte zu fassen; die Versprachlichungsproblematik stellte sich erneut für die Übersetzer dieser Berichte. Norbert Ankenbauer zeigt anhand der Entdeckerberichte, wie das Neue versprachlicht wurde und inwieweit bei der Übersetzung Transferverluste entstanden sind.
