Robert M. Slusser's Scrapbook
The scrapbook is primarily black and white photographs of performances of dance pieces taken by Robert M. Slusser with a Leica camera in artificial light. The pieces include Kurt Jooss' The Green Table (Frankfurt, 1950-1952); Martha Graham's Dark Meadow, Errand into the Maze; the Bali Dancers and other works, taken at performance he attended in the US, Europe and the Caribbean. The scrapbook also contains programs of Kurt Jooss' dance productions.
Stalin in October
Originally published in 1987. In March 1917 young Joseph Stalin, already a high-ranking Bolshevik, returned from Siberian exile in search of greatness and power. But his activities during the months leading up to the October Revolution were full of blunders and misjudgments—failures that in later years Stalin obliterated from the historical record. Stalin in October reassembles the history of 1917 and explains why, on the eve of the revolutionaries' seizure of power, Stalin seemingly dropped out of the picture. "He would always be dogged," Slusser writes, "by a nagging sense of having somehow missed the revolution." The lingering shame was crucial to Stalin's development into a Soviet dictator.
The Berlin Crisis of 1961
Originally published in 1973. This book uses the Berlin Crisis of 1961 as a starting point to investigate Soviet-American relations in the Kruschev period. The book first chronicles the timeline of the succession of events during the Berlin Crisis and their interrelation. It then turns to the close interaction between Soviet and foreign policy before situating the event into the broader timeline of Soviet history.
The Soviet Secret Police
The Soviet Secret Police (1957) depicts the main aspects of the development, structure and functions of the secret police of the Soviet Union. Much of the information contained within comes from the personal testimony of Soviet citizens who had experienced various activities of the secret police, and forms a full and objective study of the secret police and its role in the Soviet system.
Soviet Foreign Policy, 1928-1934
The present collection, in two volumes, is a continuation of Mrs. Eudin's Soviet Russia and the East 1920-27 (with Robert C. North) and Soviet Russia and the West 1920-27 (with Harold H. Fisher). Since 1949 Western governments have published enormous quantities of source material from the interwar years, but recent material from Soviet archives can almost be printed on a postage stamp. Nevertheless, documentary sources are available. The Kremlin had to spell out the party line for communist officials at home and abroad, and some very revealing statements can be found in the minutes of congresses and plenums and in the pages of the various Comintern journals. But outside the Soviet Union, only the Hoover Institution has a really comprehensive collection of such materials. Working from this collection, Mrs. Eudin and Mr. Slusser have selected and translated the most important items and have provided a brief narrative summary of the main developments of the period: e.g., "Socialism in one country," the Soviet intervention in Manchuria, the growing threat from Japan and then Germany, the rapprochement with France and Britain, and finally Soviet entry into the League of Nations.
