Os conceitos básicos da Mecânica dos Solos são encontrados com frequência na bibliografia nacional, dada a importância da caracterização do material na solução de problemas de Geotecnia. No entanto, havia uma lacuna lamentável em relação aos ensaios especiais de laboratório, fundamentais para determinar as propriedades mecânicas do solo, em especial o comportamento tensão-deformação, na investigação da resistência ao cisalhamento, determinante nos projetos geotécnicos.
