Echoes of Opera in Modern Italian Poetry
Twentieth-century Italian poetry is haunted by countless ghosts and shadows from opera. Echoes of Opera in Modern Italian Poetry reveals their presence and sheds light on their role in shaping that great poetic tradition. This is the first work in English to analyze the influence of opera on modern Italian poetry, uncovering a fundamental but neglected relationship between the two art forms. A group of Italian poets, from Gabriele D’Annunzio to Giorgio Caproni, by way of Umberto Saba and Eugenio Montale, made opera a cornerstone of their artistic craft. More than an occasional stylistic influence, opera is rather analyzed as a fundamental facet of these poets’ intellectual quest to overcome the expressive limitations of lyrical poetry. This book reframes modern Italian poetry in a truly interdisciplinary perspective, broadening our understanding of its prominence within the humanities, in the twentieth century and beyond.
Interconnecting Music and the Literary Word
Dealing with the interconnections between music and the written word, this volume brings into focus an updated range of analytical and interpretative approaches which transcend the domain of formalist paradigms and the purist assumption of music’s non-referentiality. Grouped into three thematic sections, these fifteen essays by Italian, British and American scholars shed light on a phenomenological network embracing different historical, socio-cultural and genre contexts and a variety of theoretical concepts, such as intermediality, the soundscape notion, and musicalisation. At one end of the spectrum, music emerges as a driving cultural force, an agent cooperating with signifying and communication processes and an element functionally woven into the discursive fabric of the literary work. The authors also provide case studies of the fruitful musico-literary dialogue by taking into account the seminal role of composers, singer-songwriters, and performers. From another standpoint, the music-in-literature and literature-in-music dynamics are explored through the syntax of hybridisations, transcoding experiments, and iconic analogies.

Il sogno italiano
Questo volume raccoglie gli atti del secondo convegno di studi sull’Italia organizzato dal Dipartimento di Italiano e Serbo dell’Università di Banja Luka e dall’AIBA (Associazione degli Italianisti nei Balcani), che si è tenuto a Banja Luka (RS/BiH) venerdì 18 e sabato 19 giugno 2010. Il tema del sogno è stato scelto sia per la sua grande valenza simbolica, psicologica, sociale e artistica, sia perché tanti sono i ‘sogni’ legati all’Italia, alla sua cultura, alla sua storia. I lavori qui presentati, a cui hanno contribuito studiosi provenienti da molti paesi europei ed extraeuropei, sono stati divisi in due sezioni: la prima, The Italian Dream, accoglie i contributi che rientrano nell’area della linguistica, della storia della lingua, della filologia e degli studi culturali, mentre la seconda, Sogni e favole io fingo, contiene articoli di ambito letterario, inteso nel senso più ampio del termine. Con questo volume si inaugura anche, presso Aonia edizioni, la collana Italianistica balcanica.
