Smoothly painted panels laid out on the floor have earned Adrian Schiess (b. Zurich, 1959; lives and works in Mouans-Sartoux, France) international renown. Roundly rejecting the traditional forms of painting, the artist has developed a singular oeuvre, gradually effacing all traces of manual craftsmanship. His objects, which may be placed in a room as desired, are conceived as platforms of creative engagement with the appearance and disappearance of painting. Schiess?s large-format industrial panels, which are executed in spray paint by specialized car varnishers, have become integral components of buildings by world-famous architects including Norman Foster and Herzog & de Meuron. For this book, Schiess has compiled spectacular series of photographs and extensive conversations with the art historian Ulrich Loock that probe the peculiar quality of his work: hybrid and fluctuating and yet always utterly distinctive. It is the first publication to put the focus on this essential aspect of his output, documenting works created between 1993 and 2018.00Exhibition: Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Switzerland (16.05. - 19.08.2020).

Ausstellung u.d.T.: Jessica Stockholder - Mary Heilmann : Gemälde aus der Sammlung Hauser und Wirth

Working at the interface between sculpture and painting Jessica Stockholder has, over recent years, developed a body of work of international significance. According to essayist Roland Wspe, "A little Alice in Wonderland is the way you feel in one of Jessica Stockholders environments." The artist uses cloth, metal grates, pastel flooring, and bright Lego blocks that colorfully translate a room into a bewitching three-dimensional painting one can walk into. This beautifully assembled catalogue documents Stockholders works created at St. Gallen Art Museum. Extensive texts illuminate the origins of the work, and an extended interview with the artist gives insights into her thinking and achievements.

In 2020 and 2021, Michael Williams created six large-scale paintings for the Lokremise in St. Gallen, which will be presented there for the first time. In Los Angeles, where he has lived with his family since 2019, the situation was the same as around the world. During the lockdown, his children mostly stayed at home for almost a year. There were no openings and no trips; instead, it was time to retreat to the studio.During this period he created historical paintings in an almost classical style. The Collage Paintings are the result of computer-generated overlays and combinations that were applied to a canvas as paper printouts and then reworked with paint. They are collages like those that have been made since the liberating days of Dada, when photographic images from newspapers and magazines first made their way into art. The figure is a constant in the work of Hans Thomann (*1957). The sculptor is interested in the question of how people present and perceive themselves. Thomann sounds out cultural conceptions, which quite often turn out to be fragile illusions, in life-size human sculptures of figures from Superman and dwarves to Jesus. Ambivalence, just like humor, is one of the artist's constant companions. With his works, which include numerous installations in public space and commercial premises, Hans Thomann continuously reflects on human existence. His examinations also comprise sacred spaces, in which he realizes critical or provocative interventions.

While best know for his landscapes, French painter Camille Corot nonetheless left in his wake a considerable number of rarely exhibited yet highly sought figure paintings. And while Corot initially used these oil studies to improve the quality of his free composition for later historical and narrative landscapes, it was not long before his figure paintings became autonomous works, prized for their direct portrayal of emotional and spiritual states. Standing out in Corot's creative output is the remarkable oil painting A Girl Reading. This volume puts this impressive painting into context with a variety of Corot's paintings and drawings that both shed light on the role of reading that is characteristic of his work and provide the first representative overview of the artist's works inspired by the genre as a whole. Included are essays on Corot as a figure painter and thirty full-color, extensively annotated examples of his work.
