It is astonishing how deeply the figure of Ophelia has been woven into the fabric of Spanish literature and the visual arts – from her first appearance in eighteenth-century translations of Hamlet, through depictions by seminal authors such as Espronceda, Bécquer and Lorca, to turn-of-the millennium figurations. This provocative, gendered figure has become what both male and female artists need her to be – is she invisible, a victim, mad, controlled by the masculine gaze, or is she an agent of her own identity? This well-documented study addresses these questions in the context of Iberia, whose poets, novelists and dramatists writing in Spanish, Catalan and Galician, as well as painters and photographers, have brought Shakespeare’s heroine to life in new guises. This book rereads and re-examines the important tradition of women poets and theorists who have both critically and creatively engaged with the study and reconsideration of the role played by myths in our Western society, assessing their impact in different eras. Such poets and theorists as H.D., Laura Riding, Denise Levertov, Margaret Atwood, Anne Carson, and Natalie Diaz have responded to myths, either by recreating, rewriting, and interrogating the power of myths to articulate our reality, or by creating and “begetting” new myths for the present. In order to interrogate whether myths throughout the 20th and 21st centuries can act as catalysts for new ideas and imaginative re-creations, this volume travels the path of essential works of poetry by women.

This dissertation explores the political and cultural functions of digressive classical mythological episodes in two early modern Spanish and two Colonial Spanish American epic poems: Juan Boscan's Leandro (1543), Alonso de Ercilla's La Araucana (1569, 78, 89), Lope de Vega's Jerusalen conquistada (1609), and Juan de Miramontes's Armas antarticas (1608-09).
