The Handbook of Social Justice in Loss and Grief is a scholarly work of social criticism, richly grounded in personal experience, evocative case studies, and current multicultural and sociocultural theories and research. It is also consistently practical and reflective, challenging readers to think through responses to ethically complex scenarios in which social justice is undermined by radically uneven opportunity structures, hierarchies of voice and privilege, personal and professional power, and unconscious assumptions, at the very junctures when people are most vulnerable—at points of serious illness, confrontation with end-of-life decision making, and in the throes of grief and bereavement. Harris and Bordere give the reader an active and engaged take on the field, enticing readers to interrogate their own assumptions and practices while increasing, chapter after chapter, their cultural literacy regarding important groups and contexts. The Handbook of Social Justice in Loss and Grief deeply and uniquely addresses a hot topic in the helping professions and social sciences and does so with uncommon readability.

The ATSDR toxicological profile succinctly characterizes the toxicologic and adverse health effects information for the toxic substances each profile describes. Each peer-reviewed profile identifies and reviews the key literature that describes a substance's toxicologic properties. Other pertinent literature is also presented but is described in less detail than the ...

Drawing out her mother's childhood memories of life in southern Italy at the dawn of the twentieth century, Mary Melfi takes an unconventional approach to autobiographical writing. Italy Revisited serves as a double memoir, told in dialogue between a mother and a daughter. The conversation takes the reader to a medieval town high up in the mountains where time is told by the shadow the sun casts, where wheat and olive oil are the currency of choice (barter is in use), and where marriage is as much about property as it is about love. As they re-create that vanished world, the pair finds greater understanding of the tumultuous relationships that sometimes exist between immigrant mothers and their children.
Abstract: Research results concerning aspects of iron (Fe) bioavailability from various foods and interactions of Fe with other nutrients are reported by experts for nutritionists and food and agricultural chemists. Several areas address the determination of available Fe in foods, changes in Fe availability caused by food processing, physiochemical food properties affecting Fe chemstry, and food additives that either enhance or inhibit Fe intake. Therelationship of ascorbic acid in aiding Fe absorption is discussed, as is the inhibitory action of dietary fiber. Twoimportant human nutrition aspects cover Fe availability in human milk, and the differences in Fe utilization between vegetarians and omnivores. When careful choice is made of food combinations, food additives, and proper processing methods, humans can utilize a greater portion of the Fe in low-energy foods. (wz).
