Elia Alba began photographing artists like LaToya Ruby Frazier and Mickalene Thomas in 2012. To give voice to her community, Alba hosted dinners for US-based artists of color, with themes like Baltimore, Race, and Identity (in honor of Freddy Gray) and Racial Subjugation in Latin America. Her photographic series The Supper Club captures portraits and conversations from these socially engaged dinners, which addressed issues ranging from sanctuary, policing, and post-black identity to the intersectional entanglements of gender, race, and privilege. Inspired by Vanity Fair's "Hollywood Issue," Alba's portraits capture each artist's unique voice, transforming them into iconic images.

Mobilizing Pedagogy
What is--what should be--the place of art in society? Is it merely decorative? Is it only to affirm a given set of cultural preferences? Or should it examine, challenge, even upend these norms to bring open new perspectives for those who experience what artists create? Social practice artists offer a clear and unflinching answer to this question, setting before us works intended not merely to ask questions but to propose pathways toward large societal change. In this volume, the work of two social practice artists of different generations and different social locations--Suzanne Lacy and Pablo Helguera--are brought into creative tension by two visionary curators: Elyse A. Gonzalez of the Art, Design & Architecture Museum of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Sara Reisman of the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation of New York. Working together, Gonzales and Reisman bring the work of these two engaged and activist artists into dialogue, showing how art can be not merely the mirror of society but the means of making it more just, more inclusive, and more humane.

POSTMODERNISM AND AESTHETICS: COLLIDE OR STEER?
Postmodernism and Aesthetics: Collide or Steer presents twenty-two artists who were awardees of the contemporary visual art competition by the AHL Foundation. All of them spent their youth in the 1990s as immigrant artists or as fine art students studying-abroad in the United States. While postmodernism gained momentum in South Korea during an economic boom in the 1990s, a milieu of fine arts departments at major universities as well as art markets in Seoul, still maintained a purity of high modernism in abstract painting. Organized by curator and professor Kyunghee Pyun at the Fashion Institute of Technology, this exhibition overviews the current status of twenty-two artists from Korea living and working in the United States. The show divided artists and their works into most popular binary themes of postmodernism and high modernism such as appropriation/originality; local/ international; simulacra/real; banal/avant-garde; and personal/universal.

Art in Odd Places 2011: RITUAL
Art in Odd Places 2011: RITUAL Ceremony. Habituation. Myth. Obsession. Superstition. Liturgy. Art in Odd Places (AiOP) is a thematic, annual festival that presents visual and performance art in public spaces along 14th Street in Manhattan, NYC each October. In 2011, over sixty artists and performers created public art interventions as part of Art in Odd Places 2011: RITUAL. This richly illustrated catalogue is both a document of, and critical extension on, the diverse projects that were presented. Including commentary by leading practitioners in contemporary art and urban design including: AiOP Founder and Director, Ed Woodham, co-curators Kalia Brooks and Trinidad Fombella, Juliana Driever, Victoria Marshall, Adam Brent, Ernesto Pujol, and Linda Mary Montano. AiOP is an artist-led initiative that uses 14th Street as a laboratory to locate cracks in public space policies, question the dehumanization of the urban landscape, and celebrate the theater of civic space.
