An analysis of detailed household information and data from a survey of eight villages in Bangladesh indicates that the use of contaminated pond water is related to the incidence of diseases such as diarrhea. This work explores some of the variables that are related to this finding and some of the dimensions of culture and practice that have consequences for the quality of water available for household uses. The study concludes with a discussion of the importance such findings for public health policy in Bangladesh.
