Global Operations Sourcing Strategy
We report on a survey of global manufacturing sourcing decisions that were made by multi-national companies operating in China. Based on responses from Chinese managers, the survey explored explicit sourcing and technology company decisions. The analysis provided insights into what these firms are doing with respect to global sourcing and why they are doing so. Analysis of the responses also shed light on how these decisions were made. Our results tested the validity of various arguments that have been put forward to predict or explain the pattern of global sourcing shifts that is taking place. The key takeaways from this paper are 1) the observed pattern of decision making, which can be grouped into dominant flows, indicates that re-shoring to the developed economies is not happening on a large scale and that shifting in and out of and within China is occurring with direction and reasons dependent on the particular industry, and 2) insight into the fact that that firms are evaluating complex tradeoffs when making both technology and sourcing decisions and thus a single dominant driver, such as labor cost, does not adequately explain the observed patterns.
Cross-Border Collaboration in Disaster Management
In recent years, disaster events spreading across national borders have increased, which requires improved collaboration between countries. By means of an agent-based simulation and an empirical study, this thesis provides valuable insights for decision-makers in order to overcome barriers in cross-border cooperation and thus, enhance borderland resilience for future events. Finally, implications for today's world in terms of globalization versus emerging nationalism are discussed.

This paper studies the impact of supply reliability on a retail firm's performance under joint marketing and inventory decisions. The firm sells a product in a single selling season and can exert marketing effort to influence consumer demand. We develop a modeling framework to quantify the value of improving supply reliability and investigate how this value depends on different model parameters. A Decentralized Assembly System with Component Suppliers of Different Bargaining Power
We analyze a decentralized assembly system with two types of component suppliers: one (commanding suppliers) has strong bargaining power who demands a wholesale price contract and the other (subordinate suppliers) has weak bargaining power who accepts a revenue sharing contract from the assembler. We derive the optimal contracts for both supplier types and study the impact of how the supplier type and the associated component costs can affect the optimal contract parameters. We demonstrate the effect of the bargaining power of the players on their relative profitability in the decentralized assembly system. We further illustrate the impact of component cost reduction and supply base reduction on the profitability of the assembler and component suppliers in the system. Specifically, our results suggest that it would be most beneficial for the assembler to prioritize improvement effort on subordinate suppliers with largest potential amount of component cost reduction. We also provide specific operating conditions under which the assembler can benefit from supply base reduction.
Minimax Regret Mechanism Design with Moments Information
We study a robust mechanism design problem where a seller attempts to sell a single item to a single buyer, knowing only the moment and support information of the buyer's valuation distribution. The seller endeavors to maximize the competitive ratio with respect to the hindsight optimal policy with full knowledge.
