Skin

Hardbound. Skin is a mysterious organ that acts as the interface between the inner organs of the human and the outer environment. Since it is the only organ that we can readily see with our eyes and touch with our hands much importance is emphasized on new and beneficial forms of skin care development. This volume present papers from the Shiseido Science Symposium in Tokyo, Japan, gathering together an infinite number of exciting issues that explore the skin using the molecular biology techniques available today in the life sciences. The skin is examined not just from the usual, localized perspective but rather as a crucial organ essential to the maintenance of human life. Its study is used to approach the mysterious connection between mind and body. Proper skin care and treatment not only helps preserve the skin's biophysical equilibrium but can also help precipitate a biophysical virtuous cycle of beneficial results. ‘An easily digestible, vividly illustrated look at Tokyo. I discovered stuff I’d never known despite living here for over thirty years.’ Rupert Miller. ‘Some amazing photographs that really open your eyes to the city’s history and what it is today.’ Lu Passidino. ‘A must read, browse or dip into for anyone visiting Tokyo for the first time or the tenth time.’ Dr. Ginny Butterfield. In this scintillating new book, the author peels away the fog that so easily obscures the world’s biggest, most baffling city. It is a piercing analysis of the place, the people, its history, and yet the picture painted is both beautiful and eloquent. The book covers much ground and yet is ban...

Little has been written on Japanese contract law and anti-trust law in Western languages. This book describes the role of this law in protecting the distributor against unilateral terminations of distribution agreements. There have been significant pressures both to lower prices and restructure distribution channels in Japan which have strained many distribution agreements. This volume, based primarily on Japanese language legal material, not only involves a study of applicable black-letter law, but also a sociological study of its application in practice. Detailed analysis has been made in particular of famous legal termination cases during the 1990s in the Japanese luxury cosmetics distribution system which generated influential decisions by the higher courts and the Fair Trade Commission, providing new insights into whether or not there are distinct Japanese attitudes towards contracts.

This book captures the extraordinary experiences of living and travelling across Japan and is intended to change the way we view Japan's modern society. It reveals the two Japans that exist alongside one another: one familiar, the other hidden and almost invisible to most foreigners. It moves from the gentle rhythms of the Inland Sea and the grave of a long-dead British naval officer to the sins and abasements in the heart of Tokyo, where any fetish is on tap. The Japanese define their relations with society based on tatemae (their external obligations to society) and honne (their inner and hidden aspirations). This applies not only to the way people conduct their lives but also to many aspe...

This book explains the origins and early developments of Japanese medical insurance systems from the 1920s to the 1950s. It closely examines the changes in the systems and the symbiotic relationship between Japan’s status in international relations and the development of domestic medical insurance systems. While previous studies have regarded the origins and development of Japanese medical insurance systems as merely a domestic issue and pay little attention to the role or effects of international affairs, this book closely examines the changes in these systems by looking at the enactment of the Health Insurance Law in 1922, the establishment of the National Health Insurance in 1938, the e...
