Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence: Basic Chemistry and Analytical Applications is a compendium of papers presented at the second International Symposium on Analytical Applications of Bioluminescene and Chemiluminescence in San Diego, California on August 26-28, 1980. Part I deals with chemilunescence and excited states including topics on the spectroscopy of the solvent cage — generation and characteristics of the excited state and the three features of chemi- and bioluminescence. Part II deals with events prior to producing luminol-dependent chemiluminescence; this part also examines the effects of stimulants on membrane potential. Part III discusses bacterial bioluminescence and anal...

The Cyprus Detention Camps

Beginning in August 1946, stateless and visaless Jews—most of them survivors of the Nazi death camps—who sought to immigrate to the Land of Israel were intercepted by the Royal Navy and deported to the nearby island of Cyprus, where they were detained in camps surrounded by barbed wire. Despite occupying a dramatic and fateful position in modern history, this saga has remained largely inaccessible due to the widespread dispersal of the primary sources and the linguistic difficulties presented by them. To address these problems, this book scrutinizes the scholarly literature, consulting hundreds of primary sources—many of them previously unknown—on three continents, bringing together interviews with scores of eyewitnesses, and translating foreign-language terms into English. The result is a comprehensive, meticulously footnoted guide that uses such tools as maps, a detailed timeline, and biographical entries to make this riveting saga accessible to a broad audience of scholars and general readers.

Abstract: A review of plant components possessing toxic properties provides information on toxicants which occur naturally in foods of plant origin. The nutritional significance, physicochemistry, distribution, physiological effects, and health hazards of natural toxic plant substances are discussed. The subject matter is classified according to the following categories: protease inhibitors; hemagglutinins (lectins); glucosinolates; cyanogens; saponins; gossypol; lathyrogens; allergens; aglycones causing favism; naturally occuring carcinogens; and miscellaneous toxic factors. Toxic compounds induced by processing (heat, acid and alkali treatment, bleaching, irradiation, solvent extraction, fumigation, and contamination) also are considered. It is concluded that constant monitoring and elimination of toxicants is needed if plant food sources are to be utilized to their maximum nutritional potential. (nm).
