Based on the second Women in Shape (WiSH) workshop held in Sirince, Turkey in June 2016, these proceedings offer the latest research on shape modeling and analysis and their applications. The 10 peer-reviewed articles in this volume cover a broad range of topics, including shape representation, shape complexity, and characterization in solving image-processing problems. While the first six chapters establish understanding in the theoretical topics, the remaining chapters discuss important applications such as image segmentation, registration, image deblurring, and shape patterns in digital fabrication. The authors in this volume are members of the WiSH network and their colleagues, and most were involved in the research groups formed at the workshop. This volume sheds light on a variety of shape analysis methods and their applications, and researchers and graduate students will find it to be an invaluable resource for further research in the area.

The 9th ISMM conference covered a very diverse collection of papers, bound together by the central themes of mathematical morphology, namely, the tre- ment of images in terms of set and lattice theory. Notwithstanding this central theme, this ISMM showed increasing interaction with other ?elds of image and signal processing, and several hybrid methods were presented, which combine the strengths of traditional morphological methods with those of, for example, linear ?ltering. This trendis particularlystrong in the emerging?eld of adaptive morphological ?ltering, where the local shape of structuring elements is det- mined by non-morphological techniques. This builds on previous developments of ...

Innovations for Shape Analysis

The concept of 'shape' is at the heart of image processing and computer vision, yet researchers still have some way to go to replicate the human brain's ability to extrapolate meaning from the most basic of outlines. This volume reflects the advances of the last decade, which have also opened up tough new challenges in image processing. Today's applications require flexible models as well as efficient, mathematically justified algorithms that allow data processing within an acceptable timeframe. Examining important topics in continuous-scale and discrete modeling, as well as in modern algorithms, the book is the product of a key seminar focused on innovations in the field. It is a thorough i...

Object Representation and Matching Based on Skeletons and Curves

This thesis is dedicated to the problem of object recognition in the three-dimensional space. Instead of using exclusively the information typically transported by a two-dimensional image, the concept of this work additionally incorporates the third dimension, namely the depth. The depth data itself is captured by sensors capable of measuring the distance from the device's position to those objects residing inside its field of view. The actual recognition process is implemented in analogy to the Path Similarity Skeleton Graph Matching (PSSGM). Basically, this method represents a 2D object by its skeleton and uses the idea of shortest paths to describe it. Finally, the similarity between two ...

Advances in Data Science

This volume highlights recent advances in data science, including image processing and enhancement on large data, shape analysis and geometry processing in 2D/3D, exploration and understanding of neural networks, and extensions to atypical data types such as social and biological signals. The contributions are based on discussions from two workshops under Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM), namely the second Women in Data Science and Mathematics (WiSDM) Research Collaboration Workshop that took place between July 29 and August 2, 2019 at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) in Providence, Rhode Island, and the third Women in Shape (WiSh) Re...

This book presents recent advances in the field of shape analysis. Written by experts in the fields of continuous-scale shape analysis, discrete shape analysis and sparsity, and numerical computing who hail from different communities, it provides a unique view of the topic from a broad range of perspectives. Over the last decade, it has become increasingly affordable to digitize shape information at high resolution. Yet analyzing and processing this data remains challenging because of the large amount of data involved, and because modern applications such as human-computer interaction require real-time processing. Meeting these challenges requires interdisciplinary approaches that combine co...
