Radio Free Stein

Returns us to Gertrude Stein’s theater by way of the modernist medium of radio What happens when we listen to Gertrude Stein’s plays as radio and music theater? This book explores the sound of Stein’s theater and proposes that radio, when approached both historically and phenomenologically, offers technical solutions to her texts’ unique challenges. Adam J. Frank documents the collaborative project of staging Stein’s early plays and offers new critical interpretations of these lesser-known works. Radio Free Stein grapples with her innovative theater poetics from a variety of disciplinary perspectives: sound and media studies, affect and object relations theory, linguistic performativity, theater scholarship, and music composition.

Agency on the Page

A multitude of ideas about individual and distributed agency circulated in Scandinavian culture during the 1960s, a period often designated as the early information age. Through an analysis of six novels, this dissertation discusses how prose fiction in and around the 1960s in Norway, Sweden and Denmark responded and contributed to this circulation of ideas of agency. The study argues that a transition is played out in the novels, from an idea of agency as individualistic and possessive, which I designate as melodramatic, towards an idea of agency as distributed and ecodramatic, emerging in an active environment, where multiple agents, human and non-human, co-exist (these concepts are derive...

Voices and Places

This dissertation challenges the conventional narrative of Danish colonial history by critiquing the predominant reliance on textual records and archives as primary carriers of historical knowledge. Through case studies focused on landscape and landscaping practices, it offers an alternative approach to understanding the past by actively engaging with material heritage in what is conceptualized as a vibrant archive. Utilizing interdisciplinary and practice-led methodologies, from cultural and memory studies to ecocriticism, the research examines and engages with colonial history through case studies in dialog with contemporary interlocutors. Emphasizing the dynamic nature of landscapes as vi...

Post-Mass-Media and Participation

Situating Scandinavian Poetry in the Computational Network Environment

How to grasp poetry in its contemporary digital situation, a situation wherein poetry travels across digital and analoge media platforms and intended or not collaborates with computers? Situating Scandinavian Poetry in the Computational Network environment investigates how heterogeneous forms of poetry in Scandinavia interact with and work in a digital media environment, how digital programmable and network media intervene with and shape new poetic forms or remediate older forms of poetry, and how digital and digitalized poetry through its self-reflexivity sheds light on digital media technology and its role for poetry and potentially for literature and aesthetics more in general. In doing s...

Audioliterary Poetry Between Performance and Mediatization / Audioliterale Lyrik Zwischen Performance und Mediatisierung

This book critically examines how the production and reception of performed poetry has changed in the wake of digitalization. The interdisciplinary chapters in this volume deal with fundamental questions confronting performed poetry in the digital age: How are concepts like liveness and performativity being adapted to mediatized digital environments? How are platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok helping to popularize performed poetry, and what online formats are emerging? How is the ubiquity of digital technologies transforming fields like experimental sound poetry, and how are they performed on stage? Bringing together authors from various countries and disciplines, this volume addresses diverse topics such as the evolution of poetry readings in Scandinavia; poetry slams as political criticism and a social practice in Brazil, the UK, the US, and Italy; the performance of AI poetry; posthuman entanglements between gendered bodies and technological devices in experimental sound poetry; the aesthetics and practices of poetic activism on the street and social media; and how recordings of performed poetry are being circulated in our current platformized, digital environment.

This is the first book to focus on Helhesten (The Hell-Horse), an avant-garde artists’ collective active during the Nazi occupation of Denmark and one of the few tangible connections between radical European art groups from the 1920s to the 1960s. The Danes’ deliberately unskilled painterly abstraction, embrace of the tradition of dansk folkelighed (the popular) and its iterations of egalitarianism and consensus reform, called for the political relevance of art and interrogated the ideologies underlying culture itself. The group’s cultural activism presents an alternative trajectory of continuity, which challenges the customary view of World War II as a moment of artistic rupture.
