Reading the Sings of the Times is a tool that the growing number of small Christian communities can use for identifying social needs within their larger communities and for deciding what action to take in response. The process is easy to lead but thorough. The first six sessions focus on examining a different "reality" in the larger community -- cultural, economic, family, political, media, and religious -- using a format that combines, prayer, scripture, and reflection. The concluding session helps the group decide on a specific social action based on their observations and reflections. Because the book is written in both English and Spanish, people used to speaking either of these two languages can achieve some unity by using the same process to examine their communities.

The authors ask you to consider playing a new game, one in which everyone has a chance to win. They invite you into a community which can make the world bigger, richer, and more exciting for you, as their life among the Mixtec peoples has for them. You will visit villages that have existed for thousands of years, meet their inhabitants, and talk with them about life, economics, work, and family. You will see how their way of life presents concrete alternatives to our Western culture that we must take seriously in order to create a sustainable future for ourselves, our human race, and the other dwellers of the planet. Far from being a romantic throwback to a lost paradise, the indigenous society in this book -- so close yet so far-- offers us strong contemporary options at a turning point in our own history.

A Wisconsin Boy in Dixie

"Unlike many of his fellows, [James Newton] was knowledgeable, intuitive, and literate; like many of his fellows he was cast into the role of soldier at only eighteen years of age. He was polished enough to write drumhead and firelight letters of fine literary style. It did not take long for this farm boy turned private to discover the grand design of the conflict in which he was engaged, something which many of the officers leading the armies never did discover."--Victor Hicken, Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society "When I wrote to you last I was at Madison with no prospect of leaving very soon, but I got away sooner than I expected to." So wrote James Newton upon leaving Camp R...

Competitive Authoritarianism

Competitive Authoritarianism

Based on a detailed study of 35 cases in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and post-communist Eurasia, this book explores the fate of competitive authoritarian regimes between 1990 and 2008. It finds that where social, economic, and technocratic ties to the West were extensive, as in Eastern Europe and the Americas, the external cost of abuse led incumbents to cede power rather than crack down, which led to democratization. Where ties to the West were limited, external democratizing pressure was weaker and countries rarely democratized. In these cases, regime outcomes hinged on the character of state and ruling party organizations. Where incumbents possessed developed and cohesive coercive party structures, they could thwart opposition challenges, and competitive authoritarian regimes survived; where incumbents lacked such organizational tools, regimes were unstable but rarely democratized.
