Biomarkers in Carcinoma of Unknown Primary

This book aims to examine all immunohistochemical and molecular pathological biomarkers that can be useful and effective in patient diagnosis, prognosis and treatment decision, especially when faced with a carcinoma of unknown primary. For this purpose, epithelial malignancies of all systems and related biomarkers are examined one by one, and to look at the subject through the metastatic regions window, biomarkers that can be used to determine the primary focus for carcinomas seen in the areas most frequently metastasized are emphasized. With this bi-directional perspective, the reader is able to find biomarkers of any type of carcinoma on a system basis, as well as access to which biomarkers can be used when faced with a metastatic carcinoma. The importance of biomarkers in patient follow-up and treatment is also conveyed through the clinician's eye, and so biomarkers are handled with a holistic approach in all aspects. This book primarily targets pathologists, as well as clinicians (oncologists and surgeons) who manage cancer patients.

This book presents the morphology, possible mechanisms of formation, and clinical relevance of tumor deposits (TDs) in different organs and parts of the body. It also describes the diagnostic features that are currently available for TDs and discusses the prognostic impact of TDs. The poor prognostic and predictive values of TDs were found to be as strong as distant metastasis in different series. TDs, best characterized by colorectal cancer, are irregular discrete tumor masses that are discontinuous from the leading edge of the tumor. However, even in colorectal cancers, the place of TDs in tumor staging (tumor, lymph node and distant metastasis categories) remains controversial. This book ...

Enhancement of Nutritional Profile/Biological Activity of Plant-Based Foods by Fermentation

With ever-increasing health consciousness among consumers in the worldwide in the last decades, great attention has been paid on the application of biotechnology methods in the agricultural and food industry. Especially for plant-based foods production, which exhibit co-benefits to human the health and climate. Traditional fermented foods play a crucial role in human diets around the world because of their unique flavors, great nutritional value, and health-beneficial effects. Fermentation is one of the most traditional but still prevalent bio-processing approaches in the food industry, with the great potential to improve the flavor, sensory, nutritional value and biological activity (includ...

Moyamoya Disease Update

Moyamoya disease (MMD) was first reported as a new entity among vascular disorders in 1957. Named for the abnormal vascular networks found around the occluded distal internal carotid artery, it is the most common pediatric cerebrovascular disease in East Asia. In recent years large amounts of data on MMD have been collected and important investigations have been carried out in Japan and Korea, even as the pathophysiology of the disease remains to be discovered. This monograph covers a diversity of topics and presents a systematic compilation of the data and current status of MMD in clinical practice and basic research. With contributions by more than 70 authors, the book includes sections on genetics, computational analysis of hemodynamic shear stress, new imaging techniques, and endovascular treatment of MMD, along with practical applications and future directions for gene and stem cell therapies. For neurosurgeons as well as neurologists and pediatricians, this volume will help lead to more efficient and informed management of MMD.
