Susan Hertel, a Retrospective

  • Categories: Art

This volume is the first comprehensive survey of the art of Susan Hertel (1930-1992), a painter whose work has been widely exhibited and collected in the Southwest.Susan Hertel's art embodies what is marvelous in the mundane experiences of life. In her paintings and poems Hertel pictures a state of mind that finds joy and serenity in daily rituals, in the simple pleasures of work, and in quiet moments. Her art centers on the people, creatures, and places she most intimately knew: her five children, a menagerie of animals -- horses, dogs, cats, goats -- and her ranches in Glendora, California, and Cerrillos, New Mexico. An essay by Mary Davis MacNaughton examines the major themes and stylistic development of Hertel's art, and discusses her intimate family subjects and emotional expression through color in the tradition of French painters Bonnard, Gauguin, and Matisse.

Known as "the bible" to Los Angeles architecture scholars and enthusiasts, Robert Winter and David Gebhard's groundbreaking guide to architecture in the greater Los Angeles area is updated and revised once again. From Art Deco to Beaux-Arts, Spanish Colonial to Mission Revival, Winter discusses an impressive variety of architectural styles in this popular guide that he co-authored with the late David Gebhard. New buildings and sites have been added, along with all new photography. Considered the most thorough L.A. architecture guide ever written, this new edition features the best of the past and present, from Charles and Henry Greene's Gamble House to Frank Gehry's Disney Philharmonic Hall. This was, and is again, a must-have guide to a diverse and architecturally rich area. Robert Winter is a recognized architectural historian who lives in Los Angeles, and has led architectural tours through the Los Angeles area since 1965. He is a professor at Occidental College in Los Angeles.

Poetry. Art. Her poems are like entries in an intimate journal; expression of her heart's passions and sorrows. And it is with profound grief and great love that we dedicate this book to our mother -- Katy, Clare and Paula. This collection of very human short poems, along with drawings and paintings by the author, serve as a testimony and memorial to a deeply felt, literate life. I clean the red clay / off my mare's hooves / with a white stone / or a green one. / All seems so precious -- the stones, / red earth, round hooves (I Clean the Red Clay). One of life's great features is the category of the irrepalceable. That moment that can't be repeated or matched. That subject that money can't buy. That joy that can't quite be described. That person who can't be forgotten. Susan is all of these things and more -- Robert Redford. Illustrated with black & white and color plates.

Story-poems of rural Maine, of neighbors, of seasons, and of life lived slowly and fully. Kate Barnes wrote wise and moving verse as Robert Creeley said, "of a deep and heartfelt clarity." She lived and wrote on a farm in Appleton, Maine and was the state's first Poet Laureate. Her poems contain wisdom gently imparted as life lessons. You'll feel a sense of connection from her work - a connection with the past, with the earth, with her friends, and with the human condition superbly defined.
