First published in 1990, this collection celebrates the life and work of Professor A. C. Gimson, four years after his untimely death in 1985. A. C. Gimson, Professor of Phonetics at University College London, 1966-83, was the most distinguished and influential phonetician of his day concentrating specifically on English speech. This collection of essays on phonetics and phonology of English- written by linguists from all over the world – celebrates his life and work. The work is divided into five sections: prosody; phonology and phonetic description; accents of English and RP; other accents of English (focusing on those non-native speakers); and phonostylistics. The twenty-eight chapters cover a very wide range of topics and the contributors offer a stimulating variety of approaches, with the emphasis on data-based objectivity. Balancing description and theory with application, this volume provides a serious and coherent contribution to the academic study of English pronunciation.
Pragmatic Organization of Discourse in the Languages of Europe
The volume is a collection of papers reporting the results of investigations on the interaction of discourse and sentence structure in the languages of Europe. The subjects discussed in the book include: morphosyntactic characteristics of spontaneous spoken texts; different patterns of word order in a pragmatic perspective; the coding of the pragmatic functions topic and focus in sentences with non-canonical word orders (e.g. dislocations, clefts); the range of functions of verb-subject order in declarative clauses and the notion of theticity; prosodic patterns of de-accenting of given information; deixis and anaphora; coding of definiteness and article systems. The book provides the empirical basis for the comparative survey of major phenomena found in the languages of Europe which have pragmatic relevance. Germanic Standardizations
This volume presents a comparative, socio-historical study of the Germanic standard languages (Afrikaans, Danish, Dutch, English, Faroese, Frisian, German, Icelandic, Low German, Luxemburgish, Norwegian, Scots, Swedish, Yiddish as well as the Caribbean and Pacific Creole languages). Each of the 16 orginal chapters systematically discusses central aspects of the standardization process, including dialect selection, codification, elaboration and diffusion of the standard norm across the speech community, as well as incipient processes of de-standardization and re-standardization. The strongly comparative orientation of the contributions allow for the identification of broad similarities as well as intriguing differences across a wide range of historically and socially diverse language histories. Two chapters by the editors provide an overview of the theoretical background and rationale of comparative standardization research, and outline directions for further research in the area. Sociophonology of Received Pronunciation
Publikace se zabývá spisovnou výslovností anglického jazyka (tzv. RP) a její percepcí anglickými a českými mluvčími. Dále zkoumá role, které výslovnostní model plní v obou prostředích. Úvodní část práce předkládá diachronní i synchronní teoretický rámec, který vychází z bohaté současné i historické odborné literatury a analyzuje RP s využitím sociolingvistických pojmů, především z oblasti jazykové preskripce a standardizace. Praktická část je tvořena výzkumem, jenž byl proveden pomocí internetové stránky s 18 nahrávkami a doplňujícím dotazníkem. Tyto nahrávky byly evaluovány 20 anglickými a 20 českými respondenty. Výzkum se zabývá také sociolingvistickými kategoriemi, které pomáhají vytvářet ideový konstrukt spisovnosti.
