Celiac disease is a systemic autoimmune process and appears in genetically predisposed individuals, with a well-known cause, consisting in a permanent intolerance to gluten, a protein contained in the flour of wheat, rye, barley and oats. Worldwide celiac disease affects to 1% of the Caucasian and there is recent evidence that the disease is increasing in USA and Finland among other regions in the world. It is considered to be the most prevalent disease with a genetic predisposition. The clinical forms of presentation are varied. The classical form consisting of diarrhea, anemia and failure to thrive is still common in children, but in the adult patients the symptoms resemble the irritable b...
This revised 3rd edition of the Twin Cities District Dietetic Association (TCDDA) Manual of Pediatric Nutrition is the result of a cooperative effort on the part of the pediatric dietitians from the major children's hospitals, pediatric units, and public health agencies serving children in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. This joint effort was undertaken with the belief that a single manual, written by dietitians with experience and expertise in various areas of pediatrics, would promote continuity in the nutritional care of the pediatric population in the Twin Cities. Topics include General Nutrition, Nutrition Assessment, Consistency Modifications, Diabetes, Weight Management, Nutrition for Children with Special Health Care Needs, and many more.
Parenteral nutrition in general is required if nutritional needs cannot be met by oral or enteral feeding. In the paediatric patient, its initiation depends both on individual circumstances and the age and size of the infant or child. This compact reference work on parenteral nutrition in children is based on the ‘Guidelines for Paediatric Parenteral Nutrition’ that have been developed jointly by the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) and the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN), in collaboration with the European Society for Paediatric Research (ESPR). These guidelines were based on systematic literature reviews...
Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) and late-maturity alpha-amylase (LMA) are two of the biggest grain quality defects that grain growers encounter. About 50 percent of the global wheat crop is affected by pre-harvest sprouting to various degrees. Pre-harvest sprouting is a genetically-based quality defect and results in the presence of alpha-amylase in otherwise sound mature grain. It can range from perhaps undetectable to severe damage on grain and is measured by the falling numbers or alpha-amylase activity. This is an international issue, with sprouting damage lowering the value of crops to growers, seed and grain merchants, millers, maltsters, bakers, other processors, and ultimately the consumer. As such it has attracted attention from researchers in many biological and non-biological disciplines. The 13th International Symposium on Pre-Harvest Sprouting in Cereals was held 18-20 September, 2016 in Perth to discuss current findings of grain physiology, genetic pathways, trait expression and screening methods related to pre-harvest sprouting and LMA. This event followed the previous symposium in 2012 in Canada.

The only text to feature examples of 30 key concept analyses supporting nursing research and practice This DNP and PhD doctoral-level nursing text delivers analyses of 30 core concepts that define nursing theory, research, education, and professional practice. Grounded in the concept analysis framework developed by Walker and Avant, the book clearly demonstrates how concepts are used to build theory, support research, and improve education and professional practice. Designed to facilitate practical applications of concept analysis methodology, all chapters provide an explicit description of each concept and a consistent framework for its analysis. Additionally, a diagrammatic representation ...
