Encountering Crises of the Mind
Mental health and madness have been challenging topics for historians. The field has been marked by tension between the study of power, expertise and institutional control of insanity, and the study of patient experiences. This collection contributes to the ongoing discussion on how historians encounter mental ‘crises’. It deals with diagnoses, treatments, experiences and institutions largely outside the mainstream historiography of madness – in what might be described as its peripheries and borderlands (from medieval Europe to Cold War Hungary, from the Atlantic slave coasts to Indian princely states, and to the Nordic countries). The chapters highlight many contests and multiple stakeholders involved in dealing with mental suffering, and the importance of religion, lay perceptions and emotions in crises of mind. Järvenpään Inner Wheel -klubin historiikki kertoo keskiuusimaalaisen naisyhdistyksen 65 vuoden toiminnasta: kokouksista, esitelmistä, retkistä ja juhlista. Se myös dokumentoi ja tekee näkyväksi naisyhdistyksen hiljaisen avustustoiminnan. Teos kuvaa pienen yhdistyksen paikallistoimintaa, mutta myös sen ihanteiden mukaista kansainvälisyyttä, joka tähtäsi kansainvälisen yhteisymmärryksen lisäämiseen. Vuonna 1958 perustettu yhdistys oli ensimmäinen, joka Suomessa liittyi kansainvälisen Inner Wheel -organisaation jäseneksi. Täten Järvenpään yhdistyksen alkuvuodet ovat myös koko suomalaisen IW-liikkeen historiaa. Tuolloin yhdistyksen muodostivat rotareiden puolisot. Alkuvuosinaan yhdistys pyrki aktiivisesti myös edesauttamaan uusien IW-yhdistysten perustamista.

The significance of religion for the development of modern racist antisemitism is a much debated topic in the study of Jewish-Christian relations. This book, the first study on antisemitism in nineteenth-century Sweden, provides new insights into the debate from the specific case of a country in which religious homogeneity was the considered ideal long into the modern era. The literarisation of the early modern Baltic Sea region was a long and complex process with varying trajectories for different vernacular languages. This volume highlights the interaction of local social and cultural settings with wider political and confessional contexts. With rarely examined materials, such as prints, court protocols, letters and manuscripts in Latin and a range of vernacular languages, including Estonian, Finnish, German, Ingrian, Karelian, Latvian, Lenape, Sami languages and Swedish, the thirteen authors chart the social and literary developments of the area.
