The Prophecies of Paracelsus

THE Prophecies of Paracelsus attracted my attention at an early stage of my studies in the Occult, which have now extended to over forty years, but I have only recently thought of bringing them to public notice, the extraordinary events of the present time acting as an incentive. The famous French Kabbalist, Alphonse Louis Constant, in La Clef des Grands Mystères , p. 378, wrote: 'The Prophecy of Paracelsus, of which we here give the Preface, is composed of thirty-two chapters with allegorical figures. 'It is the most astounding monument and indisputable proof of the reality and existence of the gift of natural prophecy.'

Four treatises which illustrate one of the most original minds of the Renaissance at the height of his powers. Born near Einsiedeln in 1493, Philip Theophrastus von Hohenheim, who later called himself Paracelsus, was the son of a physician. His thirst for knowledge led him to study arts in Vienna, then medicine in Italy, but the instruction left him disillusioned. He had learned to see nature with his own eyes, undiluted by the teachings of books. He was a rebellious spirit, hard-headed and stubborn, who travelled all over Europe and the British Isles to practice medicine, study local diseases, and learn from any source he could, humble as it might be. In these years of wanderings, Paracelsu...

Archidoxes of Magic

This is a source work of medieval magic that gives complete sets of zodiacal lames, characters, and planetary sigils, with full details for their manufacture and consecration, often omitted by later writers. Paracelsus is essentially concerned with the practical applications of magic, especially with regard to healing, rather than the extravagant fantasies of theorists. His sections on alchemy include details of the planetary spirits, the conjunction of the male and female principles, and each step on the path to the Tincture--one of the most complete descriptions in the whole Hermetic canon. Paracelsus outlines techniques for the exorcism of evil spirits, conjuration, and counteracting witchcraft. Stephen Skinner's introduction provides a brief biography of Paracelsus and explains the influence of his work on the Western Mystery Tradition.

Paracelsus (1493-1541) stands at a crossroads associated with the Renaissance and Reformation. His cosmological-meteorological writings exemplify the turning point that concluded the older worldview and opened fresh avenues. His nature philosophy is inseparable from his medicine. This volume encompasses Paracelsus’s writings on cosmology and meteorology in the German original with facing-page translations. The reliable source texts have been treated with methods of critical edition. The source text and translation are accompanied by commentary elucidating their obscurity through the context of his full corpus while placing them in the context of the best secondary literature from his time to the present.
