Seit 1964 hat Rudolf Thome 28 Spielfilme und sechs Kurzfilme gedreht. In den Umbrüchen des Neuen Deutschen Films gestartet, doch stets abseits von Oberhausen realisiert, besitzt sein Werk innerhalb des (bundes-)deutschen Kinos eine "Kontinuität, die zu den absoluten Ausnahmefällen im deutschen Film zählt" (Bert Rebhandl). In den 1960er Jahren noch Teil der Münchner Gruppe, die dem deutschen Film ein spezifisch europäisches Flair hinzufügte, drehte Thome seit Mitte der 1970er Jahre Filme in und über Berlin, ehe er Ende der 1990er Jahre die Räume der Stadt gegen die Weite des Landes eintauschte. Dabei kehrte er immer wieder, selbst in seinen expliziten Genrearbeiten, zum eigentlichen Kern seiner Geschichten zurück: der Erkundung und der Entfaltung der Beziehung zwischen Mann und Frau. Im Blick auf Thomes Filme lässt sich, so das Ziel dieses Hefts, deutsche (Film-)Geschichte in neuen Perspektiven lesen.
Entangled Future Im/mobilities
How are im/mobilities articulated, imagined and practiced in relation to multiple futures? A critical examination of im/mobilities raises questions as to how power relations and crisis-driven futures enable, inhibit or prevent mobility, what meanings are culturally constructed around im/mobilities and how they are experienced. The contributors to this volume look at entangled future mobilities and immobilities using humanities and social science approaches in diverse examples: Afrofuturist poetry, de-extinction projects, dystopian novels, a Uruguayan planned relocation program, lives of rural Zambian women, climate adaptation in Morocco and Austrian financial literacy policy.
Front Lines of Community
Based on the premise that a society’s sense of commonality depends upon media practices, this study examines how Hollywood responded to the crisis of democracy during the Second World War by creating a new genre - the war film. Developing an affective theory of genre cinema, the study’s focus on the sense of commonality offers a new characterization of the relationship between politics and poetics. It shows how the diverse ramifications of genre poetics can be explored as a network of experiental modalities that make history graspable as a continuous process of delineating the limits of community.

Die mediale Inszenierung der Raumfahrt erlebt eine neue Blüte - in den Sozialen Medien ebenso wie in der Berichterstattung sowie in Genrefilmen und -serien. Dieser Band reflektiert und diskutiert die Entwicklung vor dem Hintergrund der historischen Referenzepoche des klassischen Space Race kritisch. Die Beiträge stellen hierzu die Bildlichkeit und Medialität dieser Konjunktur in den Vordergrund, um die Felder der Unterhaltungsindustrie, der politischen und gesellschaftlichen Kommunikation sowie der Naturwissenschaften und Geschichtsschreibung in eine transdisziplinäre Perspektive zu rücken.
Communicative Figurations
This open access volume assesses the influence of our changing media environment. Today, there is not one single medium that is the driving force of change. With the spread of various technical communication media such as mobile phones and internet platforms, we are confronted with a media manifold of deep mediatization. But how can we investigate its transformative capability? This book answers this question by taking a non-media-centric perspective, researching the various figurations of collectivities and organizations humans are involved in. The first part of the book outlines a fundamental understanding of the changing media environment of deep mediatization and its transformative capacity. The second part focuses on collectivities and movements: communities in the city, critical social movements, maker, online gaming groups and networked groups of young people. The third part moves institutions and organizations into the foreground, discussing the transformation of journalism, religion, politics, and education, whilst the fourth and final part is dedicated to methodologies and perspectives.
Postwar Amateur Film Practices in a Transnational Perspective
Amateur film and amateur media practices have attracted increasing interest in recent decades in the context of the "visual turn". Questions of agency, participatory and political/militant film practices, and of representations of "self" and "other" are of interest as well as the institutions and networks of amateur productions. This special issue of "zeitgeschichte" contributes to this field of research by examining international and transnational developments of amateur films in the period after the Second World War. The collected contributions analyze national specifics and regional shapings of practices as well as cultural constructions in amateur film and video, they trace transnational entanglements of amateur media and tackle cross-border amateur filmmaking and internationally and globally shared discursive references and uses of metaphors in video activism. The authors elaborate parallels to organizational structures in amateur film practices in specific sociopolitical and cultural contexts and discuss aspects of memory and the appropriation of hegemonic visual cultures in individual film practices.
Medialität der Nähe
Medien werden als Mittel zur Überbrückung von räumlicher wie sozialer Distanz beschrieben. Dabei wird Nähe gewöhnlich als Resultat gelingender Vermittlung und zugleich unhinterfragt als positiver Ausgangspunkt dieser Funktion gesehen. Dieser Band entwickelt eine differenziertere Sichtweise auf die Medialität der Nähe - vor dem Hintergrund jeweils spezifischer Situationen, Praktiken, Technologien und Diskurse: Welche Rolle spielen Medien in den Aushandlungsprozessen von Nähe? Inwieweit wird Nähe von einem personalen, technischen oder medialen Zentrum aus entworfen und bestimmt? Mit welchen methodologischen Ansätzen lässt sich das (opake) Konzept ›Nähe‹ am treffendsten beschreiben?
