Diocesan Justice in Late Fifteenth-Century Carpentras uses notarial records from the 1480s to reconstruct the procedures, caseload, and sanctions of the bishop’s court of Carpentras and compare them to other secular and ecclesiastical courts. The court provided a robust forum for debt litigation utilized by a wide variety of people. Its criminal proceedings focused on recidivist clerics who engaged in fights, disobedience, anti-Jewish activities, and sexual transgressions. Its justice varied depending on whether cases involved violence, sex, or contracts. The judge applied sanctions gingerly and protected litigants’ rights carefully, in ways we might not expect: his role was to intervene in, explore, and document conflicts, and to elicit confessions and mediate disputes. Participants exploited this narrative and archival space well.
In The Vices of Learning: Morality and Knowledge at Early Modern Universities, Sari Kivistö examines scholarly vices in the late Baroque and early Enlightenment periods. Moral criticism of the learned was a favourite theme of Latin dissertations, treatises and satires written in Germany ca. 1670–1730. Works on scholarly pride, logomachy, curiosity and other vices kept the presses running at German Protestant universities as well as farther north. Kivistö shows how scholars constructed fame and how the process involved various means of producing celebrity. The book industry, plagiarism and impressive titles were all labelled dishonest means of advancing a career. In The Vices of Learning Kivistö argues that scholarly ethics was an essential part of the early modern intellectual framework.
This book shares the experiences of the Monash University and La Trobe University libraries in Melbourne, Australia, regarding the paths taken to transform and reposition these libraries within their institutions. The book showcases the respective frameworks used to enhance library skill development programs and addresses central topics such as partnerships, pedagogy, curriculum, emerging skill agendas and student success. It offers a theoretical and practical approach to overcoming persistent challenges and discusses several pertinent areas, e.g., establishing library-faculty partnerships, explicitly and coherently developing students’ research skills with discipline-specific content and transforming perceptions of academic libraries’ educative role. The book highlights the current issue of enhancing students’ research skills, which is forcing many academic libraries to reassess their established practices and adopt pedagogical approaches that will more readily resonate with faculty. This volume explores important aspects of the life and writings of Anselm of Canterbury. His is a world in which the created order with its hierarchies of natures and roles manifests a divine order that proceeds from the divine nature. Individual chapters examine Anselm’s understanding of rectitude, truth, justice, and redemption, the relationship of free will and grace and of faith and reason, whether and how we can speak of or reject the divine, Anselm’s approach to death, his understanding of the superiority of monasticism in the social and spiritual order, and the role that angels play in his metaphysical and theological arguments.
