This work focuses on the experience of a Brazilian cassava starch agro-industry in developing its technological capabilities since 1917, when it was first established. Its main purpose is to explore how the process of technological progress which occurred along with that industrialization, especially regarding the starch industry, has been determined by the following variables: I) the pattern of capital accumulation, II) the capability of the related technical base to both the promotion or absorption of technological changes, and III) firms' strategies towards innovation.
This book aims to highlight the strength and state-of-art of some techniques and methods applied to intelligent systems. Rather to cover the variety of techniques and methods available in the literature, which is out of scope of this book, it focuses on those consolidated and applied and on those with high potential of implementation to smart systems. This book has fourteen chapters covering abroad range of topics in communications. The first three chapters are devoted to state-of-art and review papers on planar filters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), negative group delay, nanoclusters, and tunable lights, while the remain chapters cover specific topics such as smart monitoring, V2I, high-speed links, RF and Optical sensors, composite material, metamaterial, energy harvesting, radar, SWIPT, and electromagnetic sources.
Global climatic change will most likely affect natural resources and human living conditions in semiarid regions. This volume presents disciplinary as well as integrative methods to assess these impacts considering the interactions between climate variability and change, water availability, land-use systems, and quality of life. This books is the product of research conducted in the Brazilian Border with Bolívia in 2013, where a migrant temporary shelter hosted, under a humanitarian visa, hundreds of Haitians that had fled several stages of human insecurity back in their homeland. In order to survive and with the dream of leaving soon, migrants strategise their relationships and harnest social navigation skills. This fieldwork was part of the Master of Social and Cultural Anthropology programa at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, for which the author was granted a VU Scholarship.
Higher education institutions (HEIs) are increasingly affected by globalization and internationalization, with implications for language use, teaching and learning in their academic communities. As a consequence, HEIs may change their approach to multilingualism on campus, taking into account language needs as well as opportunities and challenges associated with language diversity. The book aims at discussing aspects for the design of language policies, which could support internationalization and promote multilingualism and participation of different stakeholders. By presenting a language policy model, the book provides an alternative for those engaged in language diversity in HEIs.
