Studio Prix
Wolf D. Prix, founder of Coop Himmelb(l)au was more than 20 years head of Studio Prix at the Angewandte in Vienna. His architectural visions shaped the studio with radical concepts, high profile strategies and right from the beginning enabled students to develop projects for the world of the future. Studio Prix was a creative cluster with intense teaching. Refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe in British Overseas Territories focusses on exiles and forced migrants in British colonies and dominions in Africa or Asia and in Commonwealth countries. The contributions deal with aspects such as legal status and internment, rescue and relief, identity and belonging, the Central European encounter with the colonial and post-colonial world, memories and generations or knowledge transfers and cultural representations in writing, painting, architecture, music and filmmaking. The volume covers refugee destinations and the situation on arrival, reorientation–and very often further migration after the Second World War–in Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Palestine, Shanghai, Singapore, South Africa and New Zealand. A "Century of Austrian Design” offers a highly accessible overview of Austrian design culture from 1900 to the present against the background of the country’s extremely turbulent industrial history. In the process, the key aspects are explained in essays by celebrated experts. The book attempts to delineate a specifically "Austrian” formal language, citing as examples specific achievements in historical and contemporary design. As it does so, it also sheds light on other defining moments of Austria’s design culture, including the enormous potential of its inventors, the phenomenon of semi-industrial manufacturing, and the innovative design solutions advanced by the Austrian sporting goods industry. Constructive Provocation
The architecture of Vorarlberg is documented for the future in a new publication in three languages and is thus anchored in the international discourse. The book "Constructive Provocation New Building in Vorarlberg" not only describes the development of a unique phenomenon but also directs its gaze towards the future and explores ways in which the successful "Vorarlberg model" can develop further. The book accompanying the exhibition was conceived by Reinhard Gassner together with Otto Kapfinger and Wolfgang Ritsch. In his illustrated essay Nikolaus Walter allows us insights into life in Vorarlberg, the photographs by Ignacio Martínez introduce selected representative building ensembles as "spaces of a new architecture". Nora Vorderwinkler describes in a brief excursus the backgrounds of Professor Franz Bertel and the "Baukünstler" Hans Purin, two of the precursors of new building in Vorarlberg.
