Aquest volum posa llum a la trajectòria vital, professional i literària de l'escriptor Vicenç Riera Llorca (1903-1991) des d'òptiques interconnectades, atesa la seva adscripció estètica i la proposta d'un cicle novel·lístic amb tints de realitat i de rerefons històric. Fou escriptor, periodista, traductor i polític, motiu pel qual s'exiliaria al 1939. Des de la seva ocupació a l'ambaixada del Regne Unit a Mèxic, compaginà l'acció cultural i la del novel·lista que es desvelaria anys després. Aquesta proposta inicia la represa del coneixement de l'autor, que desenvolupà un paper clau a la literatura catalana de l'exili, bé fora del país, bé al retorn, perquè Riera Llorca forma part d'un patrimoni literari exiliat que cal reivindicar.
The Aesthetics of the Ephemeral
In The Aesthetics of the Ephemeral, Jennifer Duprey examines five contemporary plays from Barcelona: Olors and Testament by Josep Maria Benet i Jornet, Antígona by Jordi Coca, Forasters by Sergi Belbel, and Temptació by Carles Batlle. She argues that in both the theatrical text and its performance an aesthetics of the ephemeral materializes that is related to specific manifestations of cultural and historical memory in Spain and Catalonia. These manifestations of memory include historical concerns such as the possibility of another form of justice in predicaments of violence after the Civil War, and they also include contemporary issues such as the production of ruins by the processes of gentrification in Barcelona, the complexity of immigration in Spain, and the destruction or preservation of Catalan cultural legacies. In her analysis of these topics, Duprey engages and expands on theories related to questions of subjectivity and identity in late modernity. This book will be of interest to those concerned with Iberian cultural studies and with how theater reflects on and contributes to contemporary political dialogue.

This critical anthology sets out to explore the boom that horror cinema and TV productions have experienced in Spain in the past two decades. It uses a range of critical and theoretical perspectives to examine a broad variety of films and filmmakers, such as works by Alejandro Amenábar, Álex de la Iglesia, Pedro Almodóvar, Guillermo del Toro, Juan Antonio Bayona, and Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza. The volume revolves around a set of fundamental questions: What are the causes for this new Spanish horror-mania? What cultural anxieties and desires, ideological motives and practical interests may be behind such boom? Is there anything specifically "Spanish" about the Spanish horror film and TV productions, any distinctive traits different from Hollywood and other European models that may be associated to the particular political, social, economic or cultural circumstances of contemporary Spain?
