Contemporary Issues in Sociology of Sport

Melnick, PhD, Contemporary Issues in Sociology of Sport includes: an exploration of topics and themes that have received limited attention in other sociology of sport texts but have been long-standing social concerns; a review of the attitudes toward female athletes and the anti-homosexual phobias present in sport; an in-depth look at the impoverishment of children's games in America; an overview of high school sport participation; a study of the challenges and benefits of the big-time collegiate sport experience; a critique of television's impact on sport and its portrayal of gender and race, and a review of sport and globalization. 80s Kid

A humorous and nostalgic trip through a typical 80s childhood. Told through the eyes of a normal (ish) British kid from the Birmingham suburbs. A time when urban exploration on your bike was a day long adventure, a Wimpy birthday party the equivalent of a party on a celebrity yacht, Diamond White was a teenage rite of passage and people still wrote love letters and dreamed of winning the pools. Where no one did anything online and the only phones at home were landlines that probably had a lock on. 80s Kid tells the story of a different world, even though it wasn't that long ago.

Just as the Academy Awards have an impact upon stars and their careers, their filmic achievements influence the Academy and contribute to the rich history of the Oscars. Upset wins, jarring losses and glaring oversights have helped define the careers of Hollywood icons, while unknown actors have proven that timing sometimes beats notoriety or even talent. With detailed discussion of their performances and Awards night results, this book describes how 108 actors earned the Academy's favor--and how 129 others were overlooked.

Richer Than God is an authoritative, provocative, investigative account of Manchester City's history, culminating in its transformation as Sheikh Mansour seeks to spend the formerly miserable Manchester club into the European elite. When Conn asked an American working in Abu Dhabi whether its economy had been at all affected by the global recession, he said: 'My friend, we're richer than God'. It is also a tale of innocence: that of a six-year-old boy transfixed by his sky-blue heroes, coming of age as a writer with the mature understanding that both his club and the game are businesses. Why should modern football continue to claim the unquestioning loyalty of fans, when there is so much in the game to question?
