Molecular Mechanisms of Bacterial Virulence
The growing body of information on bacteria pathogenic for humans, mammals and plants generated within the past ten years has shown the interesting conservation of newly identified genes that playa direct role in the pathogenic mechanism. In addition to these genes, there are also genes that confer host specificities and other traits important in pathogenesis on these pathogens. In this volume, we have organized the subject areas to best fit the concept on the way bacterial pathogens recognize, interact and invade the host, on the regulation of genes involved in virulence, on the genes involved in the elaboration of toxins and other pathogenic components such as iron sequestering proteins, and on the mechanisms of circumventing the host defense systems. These areas are divided into Sections. Section I covers the first step when the pathogen seeks its host, and Sections II through VI cover subsequent steps leading to pathogenesis while avoiding host defenses. We conclude this work with a chapter summarizing information on examples of virulence mechanisms that are highly conserved.

The reviews in this volume deal with questions of the mechanisms of pathogenesis and with organisms that have only recently been extensively studied on the molecular level.**The introductory section presents an overview of pathogenesis, emphasizing common elements and genetic mechanisms of regulation and a review on the population genetics of bacterial pathogenesis. The second section deals with the regulation of synthesis of surface components and their role in the colonization of the host and/or of the host immune systems. The third section covers the invasion and intracellular growth of facultative and obligate intracellular parasites. The last section is devoted to studies of the role of bacterial toxic products in pathogenesis.
Drainage Area Data for Wisconsin Streams
Drainage areas were determined for more than 7,000 sites in Wisconsin's 11 major river basins, including all named streams draining 5 or more square miles, and all unnamed streams draining 10 or more square miles. Also determined are drainage areas for gaging stations, sewage-treatment plants, dams, major highway crossings, and other sites where discharge measurements or water-quality data are available. Drainage areas were delineated on U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps. Drainage areas are shown in tabular form under six headings: station number; stream name, rank, and location; township, range, and section; county; type of site; and drainage area. Eleven major-river-basin maps show the location and station number of key sites.
