Assessment of Toxic Agents at the Workplace

1.1 Organisation and aims This International Seminar, organised jointly by the Com mission of the European Communities and the United States authorities (Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) has brought together more than 150 participants from the Member States of the European Community, from the United States, and also from Greece, Finland, Sweden and Switzer land. The aim of the Seminar was to examine the roles of ambient and biological monitoring in protecting the health of workers exposed to toxic agents and to define a multidisciplinary approach to this monitoring. To achieve this aim expertise from the following disciplines, directly or indirectly involved with monitoring, was called upon: medicine, industrial hygiene, nursing, biology, engi neering, chemistry, epidemiology, statistics, economics and jurisprudence, and representatives from trade unions, indus try and government agencies. The difference in concepts that each of these disciplines has of monitoring and of its role in the team is fully reflected in the papers. 1.2 Current trends in occupational health and hygiene (as related to monitoring).

Interference and Inhibition in Cognition

Life scientists have long been familiar with the notion of interference and inhibition in biological systems 3/4 most notably in the neuron. Now these concepts have been applied to cognitive psychology to explain processes in attention, learning, memory, comprehension, and reasoning. Presenting an overview of research findings in this realm, Interference and Inhibition in Cognition discusses what processes are sensitive to interference, individual differences in interference sensitivity, and how age and experience factor into one's ability to inhibit interference. - Provides empirical and theoretical perspectives - Discusses how inhibition and interference change with age and experience - Illustrates the ways in which interference affects language processing, attention, perception, learning, and memory

Nitric Oxide in the Eye

Nitric oxide (NO) is a simple gas with free radical properties. No one would have imagined a role for such a simple substance in the human body. In 1998, R. E Furchgott, E Murad, and L. J. Ignarro received the Nobel prize for their work on NO. Interestingly, Alfred B. Nobel, who invented dynamite by combining nitro glycerin with other substances, took nitroglycerin for his chest pain without realizing that NO mediates its action. Now, in addition to its vasodilating action, NO is known to possess many fundamental functions that include neurotrans mission, blood pressure control, blood clotting, and immune responses. These diverse functions, conversely, imply that the simple NO molecule may u...

Bacterial Lipopolysaccharides

The bacterial lipopolysaccharide also known as endotoxin is exhaustively covered in the present work. Central emphasis is placed upon the fine chemical structure of the lipopolysaccharide and its significance for understanding their activity and function. In particular, the role it plays in the interaction of bacteria with other biological systems is examined. New aspects of their physicochemical biology are introduced and updates to the current knowledge concerning the lipopolysaccharide are provided. This important class of biomolecules has recently attracted the attention of many investigators, in particular for understanding its involvement in innate immunity, toll-like receptor recognition and intracellular signaling.
