Summary: Walter Niedermayr (*1952 Bolzano, Italy) is one of the great European photographic artists of our time. His sensitive visual language, which, unfortunately, has been copied by countless other photographers in recent years, is marked by its subtle blend of colors. For this project, he traveled between 2005 and 2008 to Teheran, Isfahan, Yazd, Shiraz, and other smaller cities and historical sites in Iran. His excursions led to the creation of a new group of works in which he examines various aspects of contemporary Iranian architecture in their cultural and historical context. Like Niedermayr's previous books, this project, which the artist developed in close collaboration with the graphic designers and the publisher, will certainly prove to be a highlight of the art of photo books.

Whether Walter Niedermayr takes pictures in the openness of a lonely alpine landscape or in the tightly controlled, cramped conditions of a closed institution, the concrete topographical references in his pictures always evaporate. Characterized by a diffuse light that illuminates spaces and colors, stretched between the visible and the invisible, his photographs reveal the various subtle qualities of spaces, from sober eeriness to poetic delimitation. The artist confronts the viewer with the expansive imagery of a photographic series that has neither beginning nor end, offering views of space as seen through the life of passengers and inmates, hospital workers and waiting room attendants. This new book of Niedermayr's photographs features, for the first time, a selection of works from different series, including his views of hospitals, prisons, motorways and construction sites, and the alpine vistas that first brought him to international attention.

Walter Niedermayr. Transformations. Ediz. italiana e inglese

Shifting perspective from the Alps to the Rocky Mountains Walter Niedermayr (*1952) has worked in alpine regions around the world since the late eighties, using his camera to explore the issues surrounding the presence and interference of people in these sensitive landscapes. In winter 2009 he was invited to Aspen, Colorado, where he created another of his Alpine Landscapes. In forty-two multipart photo and video works, the artist depicts the winter landscape of the ski resort in the Rocky Mountains. The work is marked by the beautiful illusion of the ski resort Aspen and the wintry mountain world surrounding it. Yet at the same time the visual sequences reflect upon their own reality, which the artist reveals through the medium of photography. For one, they feature snowy landscapes, recreation centers, and sophisticated, tourist-oriented urban spaces, while touching upon the limitations of the representational. This publication falls in alongside works inspired by the vision of the architectural team Sanaa as well as the series devoted to Iran (Recollection). Publisher's note.
