Causes of Prediction Errors of Pole Coordinates Data

The prediction errors of the pole coordinates data increase with the prediction length and usually for a few days in the future are ten to hundred times greater than the observational errors. The atmospheric and ocean (fluid) excitation functions as well as their sums were used to compute the pole coordinates model data using numerical integration of differential equation of polar motion. The wavelet spectra and polarization functions of the IERS and the pole coordinates model data reveal that short period and seasonal components of polar motion are excited by equatorial components of joint atmospheric and ocean angularmomentum excitation functions and this excitation is mostly prograde. The IERS and the pole coordinate model data werethen predicted by the combination of the least-squares model extrapolation and autoregressive prediction. Comparison ofthe mean prediction errors of the IERS and the pole coordinates model data revealed that increase[s] of short-term prediction errors are caused by irregular and wideband short period oscillations excited by joint atmospheric and ocean excitation functions.

Forecasting of the Earth Orientation Parameters

The Earth orientation parameters (EOP) are determined by space geodetic techniques with very high accuracy. However, the accuracy of their prediction, even for a few days in the future, is several times lower and still unsatisfactory for practical use. The main problem of each prediction technique is to predict simultaneously long and short period oscillations of the EOP. It has been shown that the combination of the prediction methods which are different for deterministic and stochastic components of the EOP can provide the best accuracy of prediction. Several prediction techniques, e.g. combination of the least-squares with autoregressive and autocovariance methods as well as combination of wavelet transform decomposition and autocovariance prediction, were used to predict x, y pole coordinates in polar coordinate system and U T 1 - U T C or length of day ([Greek letter delta] data. Different prediction algorithms were compared considering the difference between the EOP data and their predictions at different starting prediction epochs as well as by comparing the mean EOP prediction errors.

Fundamental Astronomy

Fundamental Astronomy is a well-balanced, comprehensive introduction to classical and modern astronomy. While emphasizing both the astronomical concepts and the underlying physical principles, the text provides a sound basis for more profound studies in the astronomical sciences. This is the fifth edition of the successful undergraduate textbook and reference work. It has been extensively modernized and extended in the parts dealing with extragalactic astronomy and cosmology. You will also find augmented sections on the solar system and extrasolar planets as well as a new chapter on astrobiology. Long considered a standard text for physical science majors, Fundamental Astronomy is also an excellent reference work for dedicated amateur astronomers.

Medallions

"Nothing of the former world holds true anymore," Zofia Nalkowska wrote in her Wartime Diaries on 7 May 1943. "Nothing has remained." The burning of the Warsaw ghetto had broken Nalkowska's privileged life in two; in the years to come, the need to bear witness to the horrors she had seen firsthand would lead this gifted member of the Polish avant-garde to write the stories in Medallions.
