This book is a collection of selected columns that I have written over more than twenty years for the Daily Journal, the local newspaper for Johnson County, Indiana. As I am a multicultural person, these columns reflect my unique point of view. I was born in China, raised in Taiwan, and then, in 1965, came to this country for graduate school. For most of the past forty years, I taught at Franklin College. My academic training and teaching are in law and politics. These two disciplines deal with human affairs. With my personal and academic background, each time I observe a certain phenomenon, I am compelled to learn why such phenomena occur. In 2003 ¦ I published American Society through Confucian Eyes. With this book, An Immigrant's Journey to the West: Confucianism and Americanism, I hope to reach an even larger audience to share with them my unique perspective of the world. "Yu-long Ling, PhD

The Pundits

On a September day in 1863, Abdul Hamid entered the Central Asian city of Yarkand. Disguised as a merchant, Hamid was actually an employee of the Survey of India, carrying concealed instruments to enable him to map the geography of the area. Hamid did not live to provide a first-hand count of his travels. Nevertheless, he was the advance guard of an elite group of Indian trans-Himalayan explorers -- recruited, trained, and directed by the officers of the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India -- who were to traverse much of Tibet and Central Asia during the next thirty years. Derek Waller presents the history of these explorers, who came to be called "native explorers" or "pundits" in the pub...

What Is Bioplastic Bioplastics are plastic materials produced from renewable biomass sources, such as vegetable fats and oils, corn starch, straw, woodchips, sawdust, recycled food waste, etc. Some bioplastics are obtained by processing directly from natural biopolymers including polysaccharides and proteins, while others are chemically synthesised from sugar derivatives and lipids from either plants or animals, or biologically generated by fermentation of sugars or lipids. In contrast, common plastics, such as fossil-fuel plastics are derived from petroleum or natural gas. The New World of Politics

In this fourth edition Neal Riemer and Douglas W. Simon again seek to introduce students to the challenging discipline of political science by highliting six cardinal features. The editors strongly believe that their unique and comprehensive approach, employing those six features, can best equip students of political science to stay abreast of the ever-changing, and ever-challenging, world of politics. First and most important Riemer and Simon affirm the importance of addressing the three main concerns of political science: political and philosophy and ethics, empirical/behavioral political science, and public policy. Second, the authors reaffirm their normative preference for politics as a ...
