Todo ello nos ha permitido tomar contacto con la realidad de una pequeña villa cantábrica cuyo pulso late al ritmo que le marcan los mercados del interior de Castilla. La valiosísima información contenida en estos documentos invitará al lector a adentrarse en el mundo de los tráficos terrestres y marítimos, las manufacturas textiles y sus calidades, las compensaciones financieras, las vicisitudes bélicas y hasta los hábitos de consumo. Las dificultades inherentes al manejo de una información tan parcial, irregular y definitivamente esquiva se ven sobradamente compensadas por la riqueza de lo que nos ofrecen, hasta casi trasladarnos al bullicio de las plazas castellanas donde se negociaban las letras de cambio o participarnos lo mismo de la angustiosa espera de aquellas naos que no acaban de arribar como de la alegría incontenible cuando, por fin, las velas eran divisadas desde la atalaya de la Rochela.
